Chinese private equity firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.cdhfund.com">CDH Investments</a> has closed its fourth RMB mezzanine fund at RMB 3.5 billion ($525 million) in total commitments, Chinese media reported today.
The new fund, originally targeting RMB 2 billion, will focus on mergers and acquisitions, and providing capital to growth-stage companies in education, healthcare, energy, and the consumer sectors.
Commitments were secured from 17 Chinese institutional investors, including <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.chinalife.com.cn">China Life Insurance</a> &#8211; a unit of the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.icbc.com.cn">Industrial and Commercial Bank of China</a> &#8211; and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.acegroup.com">Huatai Insurance</a>. Reports say that ten of the fund’s 17 limited partners are Chinese insurance firms. A number of university foundations and state-owned enterprises also participated in the fund.
&#8220;CDH Mezzanine Fund IV fully integrated the needs of domestic investors in its structural design,&#8221; said Hu Ning, an executive responsible for fundraising at CDH, as quoted by ChinaMoneyNetwork.com. 
CDH’s previous mezzanine funds have invested over RMB 10 billion in the last five years, with its first fund realized annualized return of over 15 per cent. In the future, CDH said it will consider raising US dollar funds and invest in bad debt projects.
The China-based firm raised $1.2 billion yesterday from paring its stake in <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.wh-group.com/">WH Group Ltd</a>, the world’s biggest pork producer. CDH sold 1.55 billion shares at HK$5.95 ($0.77) apiece, below the midpoint of a marketed range. The price represents a 5 per cent discount to the stock’s last close. The shares were earlier offered at HK$5.90 ($0.64) to HK$6.05 each ($0.78).
CDH offered 880 million shares to institutional investors through a share placement arranged by <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.morganstanley.com/">Morgan Stanley</a>. The investment firm also sold 292 million shares to a holding company for WH Group Chairman Wan Long and company employees, while another 382.9 million shares went to other investors, the filing shows.
