The angel network which has invested Rs 30 crore ($4.47 million) in more than 20 startups since its inception in 2012, plans to invest in 12 startups more in India by March 2017.
&#8220;We are evaluating three companies in the US. One of the deals is expected to close by mid-August and two more by next quarter. We are still evaluating,&#8221; P.S. Sreekanth, investment director, Hyderabad Angles told DEALSTREETASIA.
&#8220;Outside India is going to be a big opportunity for us. We are getting lots of interest from investors as well as entrepreneurs in the Middle East, UAE, US, Singapore and Dubai,&#8221; said Sreekanth. &#8220;Given our bandwidth, currently it is difficult to monitor investment outside India.&#8221;
&#8220;While we are sector agnostic, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, fin-tech, edu-tech, and health-tech are few of the sectors that will continue to attract investments from us in the current startup market scenario,&#8221; he added.
Hyderabad Angels makes pre-Series A or seed level investment. As part of pre-Series A investments, it invest upto $1 million and as part of seed round, it puts upto $150,000.
In the past year, Hyderabad Angels invested around Rs 15 crore in a dozen companies. Its current portfolio is a fair mix of B2B and B2C firms including companies like <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=GIBSS" target="_blank">GIBSS</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=NowFloats" target="_blank">NowFloats</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=+Betaout" target="_blank">Betaout</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Explara" target="_blank">Explara</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Indian+Money" target="_blank">Indian Money</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Thrillophilia" target="_blank">Thrillophilia</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Spareshub" target="_blank">Spareshub</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Evibe" target="_blank">Evibe</a>.
&#8220;We like to see a product market fitment, a motivating &amp; passionate team and definitely the market opportunity before making an investment,&#8221; Sreekanth said. 60 per cent of its portfolio companies are outside Hyderabad.
Hyderabad Angels was also planning to launch a fund but later decided not to go ahead as it could be too early to do.
The angel network has around 100 members from US, Japan and Singapore with around 75 per cent of them being active. It exited <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Edutor" target="_blank">Edutor</a> in August, a three-year old investment of Rs 2 crore, and pocketed around 3.5x return. &#8220;There could be a few more exits this year as we have initiated talks with some of our portfolio companies. We usually exit when a big VC enters,&#8221; commented Sreekanth.
Talking about other new angel networks, Sreekanth said, &#8220;it is good because ultimately everyone is helping out in the ecosystem. Lots of them are co-investing. It&#8217;s good for the network. It&#8217;s healthy competition.&#8221;
