The latest in the deal space in startups in India has seen Imaginate Technologies and The Ken raise funding, while Obino has acquired fitness mobile app startup Fitard.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Imaginate raises $500k seed funding from SRI Capital</h3>
Imaginate, a virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) startup, has raised $500,000 seed funding from seed stage venture fund <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=sri+capital" target="_blank">SRI Capital</a>.
According to a company&#8217;s statement, SashiReddi, managing partner of SRI Capital, has joined the company’s board. Imaginate’s early seed investor IIIT Hyderabad which invested in the company four years ago, has exited with this funding round.
Hyderabad-based Imaginate was founded in November 2011 by Hemanth Satyanarayana and was a part of the NASSCOM 10,000 startups warehouse programme in 2016. Its product NuSpace enables people to communicate with one another in an immersive and interactive realistic virtual world, for purposes such as specialized industrial training, engineering design, remote maintenance and repair.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">News site The Ken raises $400k from angel investors</h3>
<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=The+Ken" target="_blank">The Ken</a>, subscriptions-only business news site, has received over $400,000 funding from a clutch of angel investors, the company said in a statement today.
The investors in the round include Aprameya Radhakrishna, co-founder, TaxiForSure; Deepak Natraj, managing director, Aarin Capital; Girish Mathrubootham, founder and CEO, Freshdesk; Mahesh Murthy, founder of Pinstorm and co-founder of Seedfund; Pallav Nadhani, co-founder and CEO, FusionCharts; Pavan Ongole, former director, SoftBank; Sandeep Mathur, managing director, Graticule Asset Management; Shan Krishnasamy, co-founder and CTO, Freshdesk; Shanmugam Nagarajan, co-founder and CPO, [24]7; V Balakrishnan, chairman, Exfinity Ventures and former CFO and board member, Infosys; and Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and CEO, Paytm.
Run by Kenrise Media Pvt. Ltd, The Ken was launched in October last year. Its founding team members include journalists Seema Singh and Ashish K Mishra, and serial entrepreneur Sumanth Raghavendra.
“We believe that in the media, revenue, especially subscriber revenue, needs to be the engine to pull the business along. Investor funding should exist to provide some cushion to supplement revenue in the early years, that’s all,” said Rohin Dharmakumar, co-founder and CEO of The Ken.
Earlier this month, digital media company YourStory had <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/india-dealbook-yourstory-raises-3m-funding-jhunjhunwala-exits-intellect-design-arena-65208/" target="_blank">raised</a> $3 million.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Mumbai-based Obino acquires fitness app Fitard</h3>
Mumbai-based Manna Healthcare Pvt Ltd, the company which runs health &amp; weight loss coaching app <a class="" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Obino" target="_blank">Obino</a>, has acquired fitness mobile app startup Fitard for an undisclosed amount.
Fitard was founded by Pankaj Bora and Shubham Goyal, the former executives of TinyOwl and MovinCart respectively. It is a fitness tracking app that rewards users with Fitard Coins, a virtual currency, on completion of targets to keep up their motivation. Fitard claims to have had 10,000 downloads with pan India presence.
&#8220;At Obino, we focus on motivation as the cornerstone to a fitter &amp; healthier life. The philosophy of Fitard was completely in line with our own, of owning the health and weight loss journey, right from providing not just the tools and the expertise but also the motivation. What we want to establish with this move is that losing weight and getting fitter doesn’t have to be a hard, uphill task full of sacrifices but a positive, life-affirming, transformational journey of becoming the person you always dreamed of being…both physically and mentally,&#8221; said Ritu Soni Srivastava, founder &amp; CEO of Obino.
Obino offers weight loss coaching services with the help of nutritionists on its platform. Most of the content is customized per user, with the help of an artificial intelligence system built by the company and on the basis of inputs and medical history the users share on the platform.
In Dec 2015, the company had <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/india-weight-loss-app-obino-raises-funds-from-us-venture-firm-roundglass-partners-24149/" target="_blank">raised</a> seed funding from US-based VC fund RoundGlass Partners.
