Singaporean internet provider <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/myrepublic" target="_blank">MyRepublic</a> is heading to Australia, its fourth market after it first launched in Singapore
MyRepublics&#8217; core business is focused on bringing fast fibre Internet to various Asia Pacific (APAC) markets, with plans for its unlimited fibre broadband service to Australia on 15 November 2016. Its fibre broadband services are touted to have speeds of up to 100Mbps.
According to the ISP, it hopes to transform the operating terrain of the industry in Australia, which is dominated by the Australian telecoms firms Telstra, Vodafone, Virgin and Singtel-Optus. Australia&#8217;s average Internet speeds and affordability are observed to lag global standards, ranking 48th globally on Akamai&#8217;s State of the Internet report in Q1 of 2016.
80 per cent of the customers on the national broadband network still experiences speeds at &#8220;levels comparable to ADSL technology&#8221;, MyRepublic said in its press release. This comes at a time as <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.nbnco.com.au/blog/the-nbn-project/internet-activity-report-aussie-broadband-users-on-a-data-high.html" target="_blank">consumption of broadband services increases in Australia</a>.
“It’s a place just starting to break free from data caps and learn what fibre-powered connectivity has to offer. We know Australians have been hungry for better Internet for a very long time, and MyRepublic looks forward to driving a new era of connectivity here,” said CEO Malcolm Rodrigues.
In parallel, to this, the company reasserted its desire to become Singapore&#8217;s fourth mobile operator and further expand into other APAC markets, which has seen it <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/singapore-telco-battle-heats-up-as-myrepublic-taps-goldman-dbs-to-help-raise-s250m-34254/" target="_blank">raise $181 million</a> in a bid to compete with <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/singtel" target="_blank">Singtel</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/starhub" target="_blank">Starhub</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/m1" target="_blank">M1</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/circles-life/" target="_blank">Circles.Life</a>.

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Australian broadband market</h3>
Growth in the Australian fixed broadband market has slowed in line with higher penetration rates. Within the market there is a dynamic shift among customers to fibre networks, as this infrastructure is being built out by NBN (NBN Co), the company responsible for the national broadband deployment.
While fibre has become by far the fastest growing sector, and DSL is beginning to slide as customers are migrated to the NBN &#8211; the largest public sector investment in broadband to replace existing copper infrastructure with fibre &#8211; there is continuing solid growth in the cable broadband sector. This will be supported in coming years when NBN begins to offer commercial services based on the DOCSIS3.1 standard from mid-2017.
Despite this improving progress, the <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://techpolicyinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Sorensen_Medina_TheEndofAustraliasNationalBroadbandNetwork.pdf" target="_blank">NBN has been a tool for political brinkmanship over the years</a> and has cost Australia in terms of time and wasted opportunities, with the outcome being Australia&#8217;s low rank in the global rankings for fixed-line broadband speeds, and during 2015 it fell in a number of tables covering these metrics.
By contrast, most developed countries have further advanced their fibre projects, and are fast-tracking infrastructure developments to keep pace with customer demand for high-end IP-delivered services as well as to develop their international competitiveness and digital economies.
While the original intent of Canberra was to build and operate Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) in order to encourage competition in the retail fixed broadband, achieving faster infrastructure buildout with greater quality and lower retail prices, this has failed to materialise.
The entry of MyRepublic and its plans for fibre broadband are likely to put further pressure on this particular project and disrupt the oligopolistic market structure that has emerged in the Australian telecoms market.
