Singapore&#8217;s state investment firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/temasek-holdings" target="_blank">Temasek Holdings</a>, which is owned by the city-state&#8217;s Ministry of Finance, has decreased its stake in Univar Inc, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Univar Inc. is a distributor of commodity and specialty chemicals, with segments including Univar USA (USA); Univar Canada (Canada); Univar Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Rest of World.
The Rest of World segment includes developing businesses in Latin America (LATAM), including Brazil and Mexico, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Its USA segment offers commodity and specialty chemicals to manufacturing and industrial production sectors in the United States.
In a just published Form 13 <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1021944/000090342316001418/temasek13da1.htm" target="_blank">filing</a> with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Univar Inc. reported that Temasek Holdings (private) Ltd. has disposed of  4,475,627 shares of Common Stock at a price of $25.08 per share, bringing its total holdings of common stock to 18,171,599 shares as at 19-12- 2016. This disposal as such generated $112.24 million from the sale of this stake in Univar.
Currently, Univar maintains a current market capitalisation of $3.69 billion based on 138.54 million shares outstanding and currently trades at $26.67 per share. Based on an opening price of $26.06 on 19 December 2016, the consideration for the purchase of the increased stake amounts to $473,551,869.
This disposal and reduced exposure comes even as expectations of higher demand from the manufacturing sector translates to a more bullish outlook for the specialty chemicals space over the net few quarters, though this is not guaranteed.
Macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical volatility, such as the transition to a Trump presidency and the potential for increased diplomatic friction between the US and China, as well as the potential for <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/chinas-economic-problems-will-come-to-a-head-in-2017-2016-11-23" target="_blank">economic shocks in China coming to a head</a>.
2017 is forecast to see China <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2016/12/19/china-bubble-economy-2017/#1f59619d24b3" target="_blank">generate more bubbles and build more infrastructure</a>, increasing the current oversupply of infrastructure and accumulating more debt. Emerging market investors are <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.ft.com/content/ed112692-c2c0-11e6-9bca-2b93a6856354" target="_blank">preparing for a rough 2017</a>, though Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.cnbc.com/2016/12/02/credit-suisse-investment-themes-show-why-emerging-markets-look-attractive.html" target="_blank">argues differently</a>.
Credit Suisse argues that relative political stability, economic resurgence in some larger markets and the emergence of reform-oriented governments will strengthen the appeal of emerging economies as investment destinations for 2017.
Moreover, with a transition and Trump&#8217;s apparent pro-business and anti-deregulation initiatives, this has buoyed sentiment in the US and elsewhere, with Temasek&#8217;s specialty chemicals transaction supports this thesis.
According to a <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://smallcapexclusive.com/temasek-likes-chemicals-wants-univar-inc-nyseunvr/" target="_blank">press release</a>, in terms of insider activity, few transactions are notable but as at 8/12/2016, Pappas picked up 5,000 at a purchase price of $19.33, bringing their total holding to 55,088 shares as of the date of the filing. On the sell side, the most recent transaction saw Dahlia unload 4,475,627 shares at a sale price of $25.08. This brings their total holding to 18,171,599.
The specialty chemicals industry is forecast to double between now and 2020, with market research firm Markets &amp; Markets predicting that the specialty chemicals market will reach a size in terms of value is projected to reach $470 Billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 5.42 per cent between 2015 and 2020.
