<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=jaypore" target="_blank">Jaypore</a>, an e-commerce site for Indian contemporary apparel, jewellery and home décor items, has raised $5 million in venture funding in a venture round led by <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=aavishkaar" target="_blank">Aavishkaar</a>.
The amount will be used to scale up the technology platform, hire more people and build the brand, said Puneet Chawla, CEO, in a statement. The company will also expand its private labels.
The site was launched four years ago for the US market, and then opened up to global customers. It differentiates itself through well-curated collections and quality of ethnic craftsmanship, made in partnership with artisan communities. The market for its products — handmade apparel, accessories and home décor — is estimated to be $7 billion in India.
The Delhi-based startup was founded by Chawla, Shilpa Sharma and Aarti Jesrani, who have prior experience in retail and online businesses.
Its main competitor is <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=jaypore" target="_blank">Craftsvilla</a>, which raised $34 million in series C funding from Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners in its last round. Other players like <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=C-Bazaar" target="_blank">C-Bazaar</a>, and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=IndianRoots" target="_blank">IndianRoots</a> compete with Jaypore for its core audience of the 23 million non-resident Indians, who have higher purchasing power on average.
Aavishkaar is an early-stage venture capital firm that has more than $200 million under management, with investments in 50 enterprises, most of which are in the rural and semi-urban segments.
