Taiwanese online talent crowdfunding platform <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://hahow.in/" target="_blank">Hahow</a> has closed an NTD10 million ($316,000) angel funding led by <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/cherubic-ventures/" target="_blank">Cherubic Ventures</a>, an early stage technology-focused VC firm.
In a <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://e27.co/taiwanese-talent-crowdfunding-platform-just-raised-funding-accelerate-expansion/" target="_blank">exchange</a> with e27, Arnold Chiang, hahow’s co-founder and CEO, said, &#8220;With the acquisition of the funding, we are able to better optimise our user interface and add more interactive features to make learning more interesting. Moreover, we are going to accelerate our expansion in Taiwan.”
With orthodox education methods no longer satisfying the demands of the labour market, Hahow says its services and products fill the gaps between the supply and demand sides, in addition to providing a secure business model. Its business thesis subscribes to the need for agility in fulfilling educational and labour demands of a niche market.
Previously, the Hahow team attempted solving the problem of cross-learning but were limited by their initial platform lacking a stable revenue model, as well as problems with spatial and temporal limitations. This led to the team launching Hahow, becoming an e-publisher which integrated video into its learning.
In an <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://international.thenewslens.com/article/57509" target="_blank">interview</a> with The News Lens, Chiang explained: &#8220;Hahow uses crowdfunding to decide what kind of teacher and course content fit a learner’s demand. Teachers simply need to film a course intro video and fill out a form. As long as you have 30 preorders, you are a teacher at Hahow. Not only do we provide a video streaming and payment system, we also have multiple interacting functions, helping teachers to better interact and customize their teaching contents for students.&#8221;
&#8220;For example, students can submit their homework in the format of pictures, texts or videos. Even sound recordings! Teachers will be noticed and give feedback at the first place. Since most of the people in the market are still not familiar with the skill of filming content – digitalizing the knowledge they have in mind. Therefore, we also provide filming assistance. Either, sharing good tools and know-how or providing our in-house production service,&#8221; he added.
An element of Hahow’s platform is crowdfunding, which lets course creators and learners determine a suitable price point for courses offered on the platform. To date, there are nearly 150 online courses on hahow’s platform.
One course that stands out is an information design course that has been ordered by over 12,000 users. This specific course has earned generated around $400,000 for the course creator, the company said.
According to Chiang, about 50 per cent of their user base &#8211; the firm targets ethnic Chinese internationally &#8211; are paid users, with 10 per cent originating from destinations such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the US due to referrals.
