Vietnam’s leading antivirus software provider <a href="http://www.bkav.com/">BKAV </a>has reached an agreement with semiconductor company <a href="https://www.qualcomm.com/">Qualcomm</a> to use the US-based group’s patent in producing BKAV smartphones, according to Qualcomm’s country director for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, Thieu Phuong Nam.
Domestic media reported that BKAV was the first company in Southeast Asia to gain a deal with Qualcomm in using its entire set of patents.
According to Nam, several Vietnamese tech firms are also reaching Qualcomm to promote the production of network terminals.
Earlier this month, BKAV unveiled its smartphone samples at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 in Las Vegas, saying that the gadget was equipped with Qualcomm’s latest chipset. The phones are priced at VND10-12 million (around $500), targeted at rich buyers.
Nam said that the cost of manufacturing terminals in Vietnam was inexpensive, therefore the country has been alluring investment from big international electronic groups such as Samsung and Nokia. He is confident that Qualcomm will be able to help Vietnamese terminal businesses with the processing chips for smartphones and tablets.
In mid 2014, Qualcomm also planned to shake hands with the military-run network operator Viettel to produce low-cost smartphones.
