Green SM, the electric ride-hailing unit of Vietnam’s Vingroup, is rolling out its e-scooters service in Jakarta on Wednesday, adding a new player to the city’s crowded two-wheeler ride-hailing market dominated by Grab and Gojek.
Edison Mai, CEO of V-Green Indonesia, which provides the charging and battery-swapping infrastructure for Vingroup’s EV operations, said he took one of the scooters home ahead of the launch.
“What struck me wasn’t the technology. It was the quiet. A city of 11 million people, one silent ride at a time,” Mai said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday. “The scooters are the visible part. The charging and swap network underneath is what makes them possible, and that’s what we’re building at V-GREEN Indonesia,” he said.
The rollout follows a pilot of Green SM’s electric motorcycle service in Jakarta about a month earlier, with VinFast Feliz II scooters spotted being used as part of the service.
The launch comes as V-Green expands its infrastructure network in Indonesia. Mai said the company is targeting 700 charging and battery-swap locations across the country this year, up from 130 locations already live.
V-Green is also building a separate battery-swapping network for VinFast’s electric motorbikes. Mai said more than 5,000 swap stations are already live across Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Bali, Makassar and Medan when VinFast launched its electric motorbikes in Indonesia.
The company plans to have one V-Green swap station every kilometre in major Indonesian cities by the end of 2026, according to Mai.
Green SM is also expanding its electric taxi operations since its official launch late in 2024. It began operating in Palembang this month, making the South Sumatran city its second market on the island after Bandar Lampung. The company said it now operates in Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Bali, Bandar Lampung and Palembang.
V-Green has been adding swap facilities at existing locations. It recently installed two 12-slot battery swap cabinets at PLN Signature for VinFast e-scooter riders.
The company is also working with state-owned property developer PT HK Realtindo, a subsidiary of Hutama Karya, to develop an EV charging hub in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
V-Green has expanded beyond Jakarta as well. In a recent post, Mai highlighted a V-Green mini EV hub in Kapasari, Surabaya, where electric taxis are charged overnight before going into service.
Green SM’s move into electric two-wheelers gives Vingroup another entry point into Indonesia’s ride hailing market. The company has already operated electric taxis in Jakarta, while VinFast supplies the vehicles and V-Green develops the supporting infrastructure.
