US-based alternative investment management company <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.oaktreecapital.com/">Oaktree Capital Group, LLC</a> has opened an office in Sydney, Australia, from where recently-appointed Managing Director Byron Beath, will lead investment activities in the region.
Beath joined Oaktree earlier this year to focus on investment opportunities for the Global Principal Group in Australia and New Zealand, the company said in a statement.
“Oaktree has strong relationships and a long history of investing in Australia and New Zealand. Establishing an office in Sydney was the logical next step in increasing our exposure in the region. We are excited to have Byron on board to lead our efforts and are proud to formalize our presence here,” Matt Wilson, managing director and co-portfolio manager of Oaktree’s Global Principal Group said.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Oaktree has offices in locations globally.
It first established its presence in the Asia Pacific region in 1998, and now along with the Sydney it has offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo. IT claims to have $97 billion in assets under management as of December 31, 2015.
“Opening an office in Sydney will better enable Oaktree to create and seize investment opportunities across Australia and New Zealand. A local presence, coupled with Oaktree’s extensive global network and deep knowledge across industries, ideally positions us to capitalize on the growing number of opportunities within the region,” Beath said.
<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.futurefund.gov.au/">Future Fund</a>, Australia’s sovereign wealth investment firm, decision to cut back on its private equity portfolio has impacted Oaktree Capital also.
It was recently reported that Future Fund had invested 3.5 per cent of its $118 billion corpus into the Los Angeles-based company&#8217;s various alternative asset classes, including distressed debt and high yield bonds. However, it cut back its investment in December, taking out nearly $500 million.
