Indonesia-based agriculture business platform <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://limakilo.id/" target="_blank">Limakilo </a>has announced that it received an undisclosed seed funding from <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://east.vc/" target="_blank">East Ventures</a>.
This partnership with East Ventures, which has invested in many startups in Indonesia, is expected to accelerate Limakilo’s business growth.
The funds will be used to achieve the target of partnering 50 farmers and for market expansion outside Jakarta.  The firm will add these farmers to the group and train them to use the Limakilo application, it said in a statement.
Limakilo.id is a platform from where farmers can directly purchase agricultural products. Through this platform, Limakilo hopes to streamline the distribution patterns of agricultural products for buyers and farmers, making the process more efficient.
Currently, Limakilo has partnered with more than 15 red onion farmers from Brebes, Bandung and Yogyakarta.
Walesa Danto, co-founder of Limakilo, said, the company wants to address the problem of instability in commodity prices in Indonesia, as farmers and consumers face many disadvantages caused by middlemen in the supply chain.
&#8220;What is happening now is the low prices at the farmer level while consumer prices continue to rise. Taking onion as example, the price increase from farmers to consumers could reach 80 per cent,&#8221; he said.
Danto had the vision to develop Limakilo from a startup technology into a social enterprise that can empower farmers through its business.
The government has been supportive of Limakilo&#8217;s role in solving this problem. The business platform for farmers was inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rudiantara.
Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong had earlier said, Limakilo.id could help farmers&#8217; incomes rise by 15 per cent and lower consumer price by 15 per cent as well.
In 2015, agriculture spending amounted to 15 per cent of Indonesia&#8217;s gross domestic product &#8211; approximately $129 billion. BMI forecasts that the industry will continue to grow at a 6.8 per cent compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2016 to 2020, to $179 billion.
