Marvelstone Group is set to launch what it claims to be the world&#8217;s largest <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/fintech" target="_blank">fintech</a> hub, <a class="linkOnClick" style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.lattice80.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" data-include="300331019">LATTICE80</a>,estimated to be over 30,000 sq ft, in early November 2016, in Singapore.
Meant to be an independent not-for-profit initiative, its objective is to help fintech startups &#8211; prototype, develop and expand their business models overseas. It will also support existing companies and financial institutions (FIs) in their adoption of innovation and to form public-private partnerships to further develop new tech and financial infrastructure
LATTICE80 is located in the city-state&#8217;s Central Business District (CBD), close to the key FIs, the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/sgx" target="_blank">Singapore Exchange (SGX)</a> and the the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/MAS" target="_blank">Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)</a>.
These are the same institutions that brought Singapore to its current position as the world&#8217;s third most competitive financial centre after London and New York, according to a survey by London-based research firm Z/Yen Group.
<h3>LATTICE80</h3>
<a style="color: #000080;" href="https://sg.linkedin.com/in/joe-seunghyun-cho-4684881a" target="_blank">Joe Seunghyun Cho</a>, Chairman of Marvelstone Group commented, &#8220;We think Singapore is the right place for a global Fintech Hub for a number of reasons. Singapore, being a traditional financial and trading hub, has the legal infrastructure and access to global investors that budding fintech companies would look for.&#8221;
Adding to this, Marvelstone Group CEO, <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://sg.linkedin.com/in/gina-heng-b2990a2" target="_blank">Gina Heng</a> shared: &#8220;Plus, the time is right for innovation, and people are more receptive to the use of technology in financial services. Singapore, as a regional hub can also connect us to fintech globally.&#8221;
&#8220;LATTICE80,&#8221; said Heng, &#8220;aims to support the fintech ecosystem in Asia and bridge global players to the region. We have been working closely with <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/MAS" target="_blank">MAS</a>, who has made great strides in shaping the local fintech ecosystem. We also seek to bring partners onboard and collaborate with other Fintech hubs like London&#8217;s Level 39, Australia&#8217;s Stone &amp; Chalk, and Israel&#8217;s The Floor.&#8221;
The move to establish LATTICE80 is in line with the Singapore Government&#8217;s overarching <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/smart-nation" target="_blank">Smart Nation</a> initiative, aimed at empowering people and businesses through increased access to data, innovative ideas and solutions, and utilising technology to better serve citizens&#8217; needs.
<h3>Singapore as fintech &amp;  blockchain hub</h3>
Various media reports suggest that Singapore is well-placed to grow its position as a global financial centre by investing in financial technology (fintech), with fintech cited as <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.iesingapore.gov.sg/Media-Centre/News/2016/8/Fintech--crucial-to-Singapore-s-status-as-Asian-finance-hub" target="_blank">crucial to maintaining Singapore as a financial centre</a>, as well as <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/government-economy/in-race-to-be-asias-fintech-hub-singapore-leads-hong-kong" target="_blank">leading Hong Kong in this particular field</a>.
Said Cho, &#8220;Singapore can be the best test bed for smart city solutions. Financial technology is one of the most important components of a Smart Nation, and can serve to power further innovation.

Coming at a time when questions are raised of <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/is-spore-inc-ready-for-a-protracted-recession" target="_blank">whether Singapore is prepared for a protracted recession</a>, it may be useful for entrepreneurs in the fintech space to explore the possibilities presented by blockchain applications, according to ex-IMF economist <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Johnson_(economist)" target="_blank">Simon Johnson</a>, currently the Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
In a <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://observer.com/2016/09/3-key-points-from-an-ex-imf-economist-on-fintech-and-the-blockchain/" target="_blank">report</a> by the Observer, he observed that that while grounded in the <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/bitcoin" target="_blank">Bitcoin</a> hype cycle, Johnson argued that it would lead to significant changes outside the US market, particularly in markets with dysfunctional financial intermediaries or currencies, and that its pseudo-anonymous public ledger nature would be the default protocol for governing peer-to-peer (P2) transactions.
