Twelve Asian environmental startups have been awarded a seed funding of $10,000 each as winners of the Asia-Pacific Low Carbon Lifestyles Challenge, an initiative funded by Japan’s Ministry of Environment.
According to an official announcement, the winners were selected across three categories of mobility, plastic waste, and energy efficiency. Each project addressed a variety of sustainability challenges across the region, offering innovative solutions for local, regional or even global environmental issues.
The founders of the winning startups, who are from China, Bhutan, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Samoa, Sri Lanka and Thailand, will also receive mentoring and support to help them realize their energy-efficient, low-waste, and low-carbon business ideas.
Among the winners in the plastic waste category were Philippine Pamela Nicole Mejia with her startup idea of collecting textile waste and transforming it into higher valued products and Indonesia’s Achmad Solikhin with his project of using technology to create plastic product based on recycled and bio based plastic.
The winner in the energy efficiency category include Mohammed Saquib from Pakistan who started Modulus Tech, that produces ultra energy efficient, low-cost modular flat-pack housing built from recycled materials and Indian architect Monish Siripurapu who came up with a a biomimicry cooling system inspired by the structure of a beehive.
The low carbon mobility category, meanwhile, also saw four winners including Sri Lankan national Sasiranga De Silva for bringing the iconic tuk tuk into the eVehicle market.
“From plastic waste to climate change, we who live in Asia and the Pacific are confronting environmental challenges face-to-face almost daily. The natural ingenuity we find across our region is the key to solving these problems,” said Dechen Tsering, UN Environment’s Director for the Asia-Pacific region.
The Asia-Pacific Low Carbon Lifestyles Challenge aims to mobilize and support young people with business ideas on how to foster energy-efficient, low-waste, and low-carbon lifestyles.
The initiative is carried out together with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, The Thai National Science and Technology Development Agency and Sasin Entrepreneurship Center.
