Germany&#8217;s Rocket Internet might sell online furniture marketplace <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=fabfurnish" target="_blank">FabFurnish</a> and printing solutions company <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Printvenue" target="_blank">Printvenue</a> after failing to find a buyer for the struggling ventures.
Both companies might be shut by March, if Rocket Internet does not find a buyer at the desired valuation, according to media reports. Rocket Internet declined to comment in response to an email.
FabFurnish lost out in competition with <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://pepperfry/" target="_blank">Pepperfry</a>, which raised $116 million in venture funding last year and became the largest player in that space. At the same time, the higher end of the market was cornered by <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Urban+Ladder" target="_blank">Urban Ladder</a>, which raised $50 million in disclosed funding, and became known for superior design and quality of furniture. Caught between the two, FabFurnish was not able to differentiate itself.
In August, the company laid off about a fourth of its workforce and had shifted to a marketplace model. But that restructuring did not help as competition intensified with Flipkart and Snapdeal also getting into furniture retailing.
Printvenue has found it tough to capture more marketshare from Vistaprint. It tried gaining customers through promotions and discounts, but that led to higher cash-burn and did not solve the problem.
Rocket&#8217;s other companies such as food delivery service <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Foodpanda" target="_blank">Foodpanda</a> and fashion retailer <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Jabong" target="_blank">Jabong</a> have also been struggling in the Indian market.
Not only that, Rocket&#8217;s India ventures have seen large-scale exodus of senior executives in the last six months. They include Fabfurnish’s founders Mehul Agrawal and Vikram Chopra who left the firm to launch their own venture. Rohit Chadda, co-founder of Foodpanda, quit in August last year amidst controversy over his management of the company. Jabong&#8217;s Praveen Sinha and Arun Chandra Mohan left in September.
DealStreetAsia had earlier reported about Rocket&#8217;s problems in Asia. APACIG CEO Hanno Stegmann has said that discounts and vouchers cannot go on forever, and sustainable business models need to be in place for their Asia ventures.
