Agri-tech startup <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/agrostar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AgroStar</a> &#8211; that sells agricultural inputs and products to farmers &#8211; has raised $27 million in its latest funding round led by venture capital firm <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/Bertelsmann" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bertelsmann India</a>.
According to local <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/startups/agrostar-raises-27m-funding-led-by-bertelsmann-india/68384826" target="_blank" rel="noopener">media reports</a>, the Series C round also saw participation from its existing investors Accel, Chiratae Ventures and Aavishkar Bharat Fund.
The Pune-based startup, which started operations in 2013, plans to use the funds to scale up operations and strengthen its technology platform. It also plans to invest in boosting its leadership team by hiring top executives to lead various verticals like technology, data science and agriculture.
“We intend to invest more in data science and strengthen our technology capabilities so that we can provide better real-time and relevant information to more farmers in the country,” said chief executive officer of AgroStar Shardul Sheth told The Economic Times.
In 2017, AgroStar has raised $10 million in series B round of funding led by Accel India, along with existing investors IDG Ventures and Aavishkaar.
Owned and operated by ULink AgriTech Pvt. Ltd, AgroStar&#8217;s services are accessible to farmers through a missed call service or an Android mobile application, removing intermediary layers in agricultural purchases.
The company currently has presence in Maharashtra Gujarat and Rajasthan and is looking to expand across more states in the country.
“We will use the fresh funds to expand our network in new geographies as well,” said Sheth.
Given the scope for growth in this agriculture-dependent country, the agritech space is attracting more investor attention now. Last year, CropIn Technology Solutions Pvt Ltd raised Rs58 crore ($8 million) in a Series B funding round from Chiratae Ventures and the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation Strategic Investment Fund.
Also, Eruvaka Technologies, which manufactures on-farm diagnostic equipment for aquaculture farmers to reduce their risk and increase productivity, raised an undisclosed amount of funding from the Netherlands-based animal nutrition and aqua feed firm Nutreco last year. Existing investor Omnivore Ventures had also participated in the round.
Most recently, LeanAgri has raised an undisclosed amount in a seed round led by early-stage venture capital investor India Quotient.
