Singapore government owned fund <a href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Temasek" target="_blank">Temasek Holdings Pte</a> will pay about $180 million for a minority stake in US-based electronic dealing firm <a href="http://www.virtu.com/" target="_blank">Virtu Financial Inc</a>, executives familiar with the details of the transaction said.
Temasek will make a minority investment in Virtu by purchasing a portion of the equity investment held by <a href="http://www.silverlake.com/" target="_blank">Silver Lake</a>, which will continue to be a minority shareholder in Virtu, the New York-based company said without disclosing the price or other terms of the transaction.
It is learnt that Temasek will hold around 10 per cent stake in Virtu post the deal.
Douglas Cifu, CEO of Virtu, said, “Temasek is an ideal partner for Virtu. We appreciate their investment and confidence in our future. Their extensive knowledge and relationships in Singapore, Asia and the Far East will be particularly beneficial as we look to expand into new asset classes and geographies.”
According to the Singapore fund’s latest annual report, North American and Europe now account for about 14 per cent of its $177 billion portfolio, when compared to 12 per cent a year earlier. Its investments in the US include, stakes in <a href="http://www.thermofisher.com/" target="_blank">Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc,</a> <a href="http://www.markit.com" target="_blank">Markit Ltd</a> and <a href="http://www.cognizant.com/" target="_blank">Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp</a>.
Virtu, which is a high-frequency traders (HFT) platform, had deferred plans for a listing earlier this year after a row over HFT, following the publication of the book ‘Flash Boys&#8217; from the best-selling author Michael Lewis.
Lewis had implied that the companies in this space, Wall Street brokerages and exchanges were collaborating to rig the markets.
