US and Finland based MariaDB Corporation, which provides an <a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/chinas-plan-world-domination-ai-isnt-crazy-80325/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">open source database</a>, has raised $27 million in a series C funding led by <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/alibaba-group-expands-presence-in-australia-new-zealand-64197/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alibaba Group</a>.
The investment will see the company expanding its reach globally as the open source database standard.
The funding round also saw participation from existing investors Intel Capital, California Technology Ventures, Tesi, SmartFin Capital and Open Ocean. This round brings the total capital raised by MariaDB this year to $54 million &#8211; including the $27 million invested by European Investment Bank (EIB), MariaDB said in an announcement on Wednesday.
&#8220;This investment allows MariaDB to further accelerate growth, while delivering new solutions for the cloud and automation through machine learning,&#8221; said Michael Howard, CEO of MariaDB.
MariaDB&#8217;s open source model and active community participation has been used by technology giants Alibaba, Facebook, Tencent and others.
The company will continue its collaboration with Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, to deliver new solutions for the cloud and emerging use cases. Both companies have worked together to enhance features of products such as AliSQL, a cloud-friendly open source project that enables Alibaba&#8217;s work with MariaDB.
MariaDB reaches over 60 million developers worldwide through its inclusion in every major Linux distribution, as well as a growing presence in the world&#8217;s major cloud providers. It ended the fiscal year 2017 and last quarter with historical revenue gains, it said in its statement.
Further, the average deal size has also doubled as customers deployed MariaDB across growing segments of their business, including the first enterprise-wide replacement and migration from Oracle Enterprise to MariaDB.
