Startups in India have another reason to smile.
Online crowdfunding platform AngelList, headquartered in the Silicon Valley, is all set to make its India debut, which will enable entrepreneurs in the country to raise capital from accredited investors.
AngelList’s India-dedicated fund, called The Collective, has built an impressive list of sponsors including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Salil Deshpande of Bain Capital Ventures, Matrix Partners’ Avnish Bajaj, Tarun Davda and Vikram Vaidyanathan, Navroz Udwadia of Falcon Edge Capital and DST Global’s Rahul Mehta. In addition, venture funds such as Kalaari Capital, FJ Labs and Beenext are also onboard.
According to The Collective website, AngelList India partner Utsav Somani; Nipun Mehra, who was formerly with Sequoia Capital, Flipkart, and Pine Labs; and Pankaj Jain, ex-partner, 500 Startups India are on its investment committee.
The Collective will invest up to $150,000 (Rs 1 crore) per deal into syndicates led by angel investors and VCs, according to its Medium post.
For the uninitiated, AngelList had expanded its Syndicates programme to India about a year ago with the purpose of giving experienced early-stage investors more spending potential. Syndicates, launched in 2013 in the US, essentially operates like mini funds.
In India, over 50 Indian startups have been so far funded through the AngelList India Syndicates platform, and these include names such as BharatPe, Hala-Play, Yulu Bikes and Open Bank.
