Singapore&#8217;s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has approved home-grown bike-sharing player Anywheel&#8217;s application to increase its maximum fleet size to 15,000, up from 10,000 currently.
The application was the first for the year under the half-yearly bicycle-sharing scheme, LTA said in a statement on its website.
Anywheel offers bike-sharing for 50 Singapore cents per 30 minutes, with &#8220;day passes&#8221; for about S$2.
In a nod to one of the failures of the city-state&#8217;s previous dockless bike-sharing plays, bicycles must be returned to designated parking areas for the charges to cease.
On Wednesday, the LTA opened its latest half-yearly cycle for applications to begin offering bicycle-sharing services or to expand fleet sizes.
The LTA said it considers applicants&#8217; ability and plans for managing indiscriminate parking, including educating riders on how to park correctly. The ability to maintain healthy fleet utilisation rates and managing demand is also considered, it said, as are companies&#8217; overall track record.
Bike-sharing, as a business model, has struggled across multiple countries. Many players have sprouted up in China only to fold. Even larger bike-sharing players such as Ofo have struggled, with the Chinese player reportedly shifting gears and foraying into e-commerce.
Within Singapore, bike-sharing operators faced a shakeup after an initial frenzy of launches.
Late last year, SG Bike took over Chinese startup Mobike’s licence. Mobike, which entered the Singapore market in 2017 and had approval for a maximum fleet size of 25,000, had said it was rolling back its international operations. Before the takeover, SG Bike only had a licence for 3,000 bicycles.
Other bike-sharing operators like Ofo and Singapore’s oBike have experienced similar troubles. Both companies ceased their operations in the city-state in 2018.
Singapore’s other bike-sharing operator, Moov Technology, was granted approval to operate a fleet of up to 10,000 bicycles in October 2019.
At the time, LTA said introducing QR code parking systems and user bans had resulted in the number of trips ending with indiscriminate parking falling to 13 per cent, down from 44 per cent earlier.
