According to <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/money/artha-india-ventures-to-launch-rs-200-crore-early-stage-vc-fund/articleshow/59063062.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a report</a> in The Economic Times, the family office of former BSE director Ashok Damani is in the final stages of making a formal application to market regulator Sebi to register Artha Venture Fund.
The fund will be floated with a target size of Rs 200 crore ($31 million) with a greenshoe option of Rs 100 crore ($15.5 million). It will invest in startups across seed, pre-series A and series-A rounds of funding.
The fund is likely to make the first close of its fund a month after the regulator grants its approval. The new fund will look at ticket sizes ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 7 crore across startups, said the report.
&#8220;We have received commitments from a bunch of Indian high net worth individuals to make the first Rs 40 crore,&#8221; Anirudh Damani, partner at Artha India Ventures, told the newspaper.
&#8220;The total commitment for a company over three rounds will be between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore,&#8221; he added. Through the fund, Damani is looking to lead and participate in about 10-12 deals each year. &#8220;Our commitment to investors is to show them an internal rate of return (IRR) of 30-40 per cent.&#8221;
According to a <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.livemint.com/Companies/oYwQzQ9Huw23vIm3BXC8nK/Artha-India-aims-to-double-portfolio-in-three-years.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">separate report</a> in Mint, Artha India is planning to double its portfolio to 100 start-ups in three years. The investor already has over 51 companies in its portfolio including mobility start-up One Way Cab, peer-to-peer lending platform LenDen Club and US-based credit score app Tala.
It is also in talks with at least four early-stage companies to invest $25,000-50,000 in each and close the deals within two-three months.
The dry powder with VC firms is piling up as investments in early stage companies has pared its pace this year. Earlier this year, tech-focused venture capital firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/stellaris-venture" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Stellaris Venture Partners</a> marked the first close of its $100 million fund at $50 million in January. <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/indian-angel-network" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indian Angel Network</a>, one of the largest angel networks in Asia, also recently marked the first close of its maiden fund at Rs 175 crore ($27.3 million). The fund has a target of Rs 350 crore ($55 million). Another early-stage investor <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/pi-ventures" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">pi Ventures</a> also announced the first close of its $30 million fund at $13 million.
