Corporate venture capital is predicted to contribute to an increasingly larger proportion of overall VC investments. The data so far seems to back the theory.
Corporate VC activity picked up in the first half of 2017 on the back of an increase in the formation of new VC units of established global enterprises. According to data compiled by venture capital intelligence platform CB Insights, 102 new CVC arms invested in the first half of this year, up 65 per cent from H2 2016.
In the first half of this year, corporate VCs participated in 798 deals worth $13.3 billion globally, an increase of 12 per cent over H2 2016 in terms of deals completed.

Mohd Khairil Abdullah
CEO, Axiata Digital Services
Axiata Digital Services, the digital services arm of telecommunications corporation Axiata Group Berhad, recently invested $16.8 million in Swedish insurtech startup BIMA and led a $23-million Series B round in Melbourne-based mobile advertising startup Unlockd.
As its CEO, Khairil leads the company’s investments and operations in digital businesses. He oversees Axiata&#8217;s companies and investments focused on Digital Commerce, Digital Advertising, Mobile Money, Entertainment, Disruptor Model Services and Digital Enablement Platforms.
Prior to this, Khairil was the Group Chief Marketing and Operations Officer of Axiata Group Berhad, a role he assumed since joining Axiata in 2012.

Sarah is focused on spurring further growth via external ventures and investments at Sime Darby, one of Asia’s largest conglomerates with a market cap of $13 billion. Earlier, she spearheaded the roll out of a new corporate venture capital unit in the company that invested in precommercial companies in the biotechnology space.
She also co-founded Asia Women Circle that drives @leaninmalaysia, a platform which harnesses the power of community to embolden women to achieve their full potential.

Montelibano leads Ayala’s Business Development team in analysing new sectors/markets outside of the firm’s core businesses in the Philippines and Asia. He originates and executes investment transactions and partnerships in the domestic healthcare and logistics sectors, and in select ASEAN markets, including Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar.
He also provides management oversight to Ayala Corporation’s investee companies in Vietnam, including participation in Board and Investment Committee meetings.

Singtel Innov8, the corporate venturing arm of the Singtel Group, launched its $250 million fund in 2010. Since then, it has invested in more than 65 companies across the globe, including in the US, Singapore, Australia and Israel. The firm recently led a $20 million Series D round in cyber security startup CounterTack, and participated in a $21.25 million Series C round in Synack, Inc.
Edgar is the Chief Executive Officer of Singtel Innov8. Based in Singapore, he has over 18 years of telecommunications experience. Prior to Singtel Innov8, he was VP of Strategic Investments responsible for coordinating and executing all M&amp;A activities undertaken by Singtel.
