Asian startups sealed mega venture capital funding rounds to account for five of the largest deals globally in the second quarter of 2018, according to the latest PwC-CB Insights MoneyTree Report Q2 2018.
Topping the list was Chinese truck-hailing company Manbang Group&#8217;s $1.9-billion funding round led by SoftBank’s Vision Fund and China Reform Fund, a private equity firm backed by China Reform Holdings Corporation Ltd. The second largest deal was Japan&#8217;s Toyota Motor Corporation&#8217;s $1-billion investment in Singapore&#8217;s ride-hailing firm Grab, which is said to value the latter at over $10 billion.
Asia also added nine new unicorns during the quarter, in contrast to four and six in Europe and North America respectively.

<h3>Asia, North America Lead Global Deals</h3>
Global funding increased by 6 per cent to $51 billion in Q2 2018 across 3,564 deals, driven by large jumps in deal activity in Asia and North America. Asia accounted for about 41 per cent of the deal value at $21.2 billion across 1,300 deals, an increase of about 10 per cent in value over the previous quarter.

Corporations or their venture arms participated in 36 per cent of venture capital deals in Asia in the second quarter, up from 35 per cent in the first quarter of  2018.
Meanwhile, VC-backed companies in North America raised $23.7 billion in Q2 2018, up slightly from $23.2 billion in the first quarter, the report added. The number of deals in the region increased significantly from 1,396 in the first quarter to 1,506 in Q2. In comparison, total quarterly funding in Europe increased 13 per cent to $5.7 billion across 659 deals.

<h3>Most Active VC Investors</h3>
The report also noted that of the top five global venture capital investors, three belonged to China. Beijing-based ZhenFund made maximum investments during the second quarter, including investing in a $20-million round for TrustToken, a San Francisco, CA-based platform for asset-backed tokens, and backing a $15.7-million round in Synyi, an artificial intelligence start-up.
The other top investors included US-based Plug and Play Ventures, 500 Startups, Sequoia Capital China, and IDG Capital.

<h3>Mega Rounds &amp; Funding Stages</h3>
Asia saw 40 deals involving financing of $100 million and above in Q2, up from 29 in Q1, while North America saw 46 mega-rounds in the second quarter, an increase from 36 in the previous quarter. Besides, mega-rounds were flat in Europe at seven deals.
Meanwhile, median Asian seed-stage deal size increased to $1.5 million in Q2 from $1.2 million in Q1, while median early-stage deal size in the region declined to $6.3 million in the Q2, from $7.1 million in Q1.
Asian median later-stage deal size jumped to $100 million in the second quarter, up from $69.5 million in Q1. Deals over $200 million doubled to 12 in Q2, from six in Q1.
