Astroscale, a space debris removal company from Japan, has secured $80 million in an extended Series D round, according to a statement.
Astroscale did not disclose who the investors were, but said that the latest injection brings total capital raised to $132 million.
According to Crunchbase data, Astroscale first announced its $50 million Series D round in October, with investment from names like UTokyo Innovation Platform, Innovation Network Corporation of Japan and Mitsubishi Estate. Other prominent names on its cap table include: SBI Investment, ANA Holdings, JAFCO Japan.
Astroscale added that it will also be setting up a new office in Denver, Colorado in addition to existing offices in Singapore, Japan and the United Kingdom.
“This is an exciting time for Astroscale and marks a significant milestone for the company, its employees and future customers who will all benefit from the opportunities this expansion presents,” said its founder and CEO, Nobu Okada.
“The United States has been active in addressing issues related to space traffic management and the mitigation of orbital debris. An office in the United States will allow us to work closely with policy makers and business leaders to devise a sustainable solution for this global issue.”
Astroscale&#8217;s US office will be led by Ron Lopez as managing director. Lopez joins Astroscale with over 25 years of aerospace experience, with stints at the United States Air Force, Boeing and Honeywell Aerospace.
Founded in 2013, Astroscale develops solutions for satellite end-of-life and debris removal services, aimed at preventing space debris buildup. It is currently developing its second mission, ELSA-d, which is a demonstration for end-of-life services.
