Sydney-based <a href="http://tempuspartners.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tempus Partners</a> has closed a A$40 million ($32.2 million) fund that will target investments in early-stage Australian business technology and software startups.
Founded in 2013 by entrepreneur and investor Alister Coleman, this new fund was raised following the firm investing in an existing portfolio of five startup ventures from early backers and earnings generated via exits from investments in companies that include Freelancer.com, Clipp and ShippingEasy.
According to media reports, the firm intends to make cumulative investments of up to A$3 million into individual ventures across two or more rounds and has begun to engage potential targets out of this fund.
Its existing portfolio includes ventures such as Uptick, Forever Network, and ExpenseCheck. Conrad Yiu and Andrew Larsen serve as Venture Partners of the fund.
Coleman is the founder and Managing Partner of Tempus Partners, with over 14 years experience as an investor, founder and adviser to tech companies. He oversees Tempus Partners’ first fund and is a director of Forever Network and Uptick. He co-founded ShippingEasy, a market-leading SaaS company acquired by Stamps.com in July 2016, and previously led Strategy and M&amp;A at Fairfax Digital.
The close of this new fund will see Tempus Partners concentrate on B2B startups that can scale on a global basis, claiming that these firms have already created over A$14 billion of shareholder value over the last eight years.
This growth is expected to continue given that Australia possesses a robust resource base and a proven track record in developing global technology enterprises. Atlassian is a primary example of this, with the <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/asx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)</a> seeing <a href="http://www.asx.com.au/education/investor-update-newsletter/201702-behind-the-growth-in-asx-tech-listings.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more public listings of technology listings in the 2015/2016 period than the US-based NASDAQ</a>.
Since 2013, the exit window for investors to realise the value of investing in tech startups has reopened following the listing of Freelancer and OzForex on ASX and Twitter on NYSE.
In recent quarters, Australia&#8217;s investment space has heated up, with Carthona Capital closing the first half of an A$100 million fund and Airtree Ventures closing an A$250 million fund in September 2016.
