Poynt, a US-based smart payment terminal provider with offices in India and Singapore, has raised a $100-million Series C funding round from a group of global investors, including new backers Elavon and National Australia Bank.
In a statement, Poynt says, the new funding represents an important milestone in its ambition to become “the de facto operating system for payment terminals worldwide”.
Founded by former Google Wallet and Paypal executive Osama Bedier in 2013, Poynt describes itself as a platform that empowers merchants with the technology to transform their business. The company develops a connected, multi-purpose payment terminal device that runs third-party apps. It also provides an open operating system that can power any smart payment terminal worldwide.
The company claims that, to date, nearly 30 million consumers and over 100,000 merchants have interacted on a Poynt device.
Going forward, the Palo Alto-based company said, it will engage in various partnerships to seize the huge opportunity in the retail tech market.
“With an open ecosystem and digital distribution, we will partner with banks, digital wallets, ISOs, ISVs and developers to push down new superpowers to every cashier and store associate &#8212; transforming a $200 billion retail tech market into a $1 trillion opportunity, and giving their consumers much better experiences,” Bedier said.
The new capital beings Poynt’s total funding to $133 million, having previously raised $7 million in its Series A round and $28 million for Series B.
In its Series B funding round in 2015, the company was valued $188 million, and received investment from Oak HC/FT, a venture fund focused on health care and financial technology, Stanford-StartX Fund and previous investors Matrix Partners, Webb Investment Network, and Nyca Partners. Poynt also counts Google Ventures as an investor.
