<a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=MedGenome+Labs+Pvt+Ltd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MedGenome Labs Pvt Ltd</a>, a Bangalore-based genomics research and diagnostics company, has raised $30 million (Rs 192 crore) in a Series C round led by existing investor <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Sequoia+Capital" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sequoia Capital</a> and new investor <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Sofina+SA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sofina SA</a>.
Existing investor Zodius Capital also participated in the round, the company said in a statement. The round also saw participation from Zodius Capital, Kris Gopalakrishnan of Infosys, and Lakshmi Narayanan, former CEO of Cognizant.
The company has now raised a total of $54 million including the fresh round.
MedGenome will use the proceeds to fast track the development of its affordable diagnostics tests, besides raising awareness about the importance of genetic tests. The funds will also be used to broaden its biomarker discovery programmes.
“MedGenome has established leadership in genetic diagnostics for inherited diseases in India. We will now expand DNA-based testing to cover infectious diseases, including tuberculosis,” said Sam Santhosh, founder and chairman, MedGenome.
Founded in 2013, MedGenome provides a range of genetic diagnostic tests in India, including prenatal, paediatric inherited disorders, and oncology testing. It also offers sequencing platforms, bioinformatics, computing, and big data analytics through its lab in Silicon Valley. The company currently has more than 360 employees across its headquarters in Foster City, California and its offices/labs in Bangalore, Delhi, and Singapore.
In 2015, MedGenome had raised $20 million in Series B round of funding from Sequoia Capital. Prior to that in 2013, the company, which operates as a subsidiary of Kerala-based SciGenom Labs Pvt. Ltd, had secured $4 million in its Series A round from Emerge Ventures and Papillon Capital.
In March, another diagnostic firm iGenetic Diagnostics Pvt Ltd had raised Rs 133 crore in funding from Manipal Education and Medical Group, and UK-based CDC Group Plc. Last December, Core Diagnostics had raised $12 million from private equity firm Eight Roads Ventures, US-based F-Prime Capital Partners and existing investor Artiman Ventures.
