US global investment management firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=BlackRock">BlackRock</a> has announced the appointment of Geraldine Buckingham as chair and head of BlackRock Asia Pacific from February 2019.
Buckingham, global head of corporate strategy at BlackRock, will succeed Ryan Stork, who becomes deputy global chief operating officer. She will move from New York to Hong Kong to take on the new role.
The move comes as BlackRock continues to consider Asia Pacific as one of its “most critical priorities”, according to chairman and CEO Laurence D. Fink.
“Consistent with our approach around the world, we aim to have a truly local presence in Asia so we can respond to the unique needs, objectives, and cultures of our clients in each market,” he added.
Buckingham, who was named to Fortune Magazine and Crain&#8217;s New York Business&#8217; &#8220;40 Under 40&#8221; lists for 2017, previously served as Head of Americas Corporate Strategy at BlackRock.
Prior to joining the New York-listed investment management firm in 2014, She was a partner with <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=McKinsey%20&amp; Company">McKinsey &amp; Company</a>’s financial services practice, working primarily with large global asset managers with additional experience in wealth management and private equity, as well as functional expertise in strategy and organization.
“BlackRock’s business in Asia Pacific is extremely well positioned to meet our clients’ retirement and wealth needs… I am thrilled to be taking on this new challenge and will maintain a sharp focus on current priorities, while capitalizing on major growth opportunities to deliver the right mix of investment strategies for our clients,” Buckingham said.
During Stork&#8217;s tenure, BlackRock said it has made new inroads into China, launched its first onshore fund, and captured increasing client demand for offshore investments.
&#8220;Strengthening the region’s leadership, diversifying revenue streams and broadening our client base, Stork has prepared APAC for the next stage of growth,&#8221; BlackRock added.
In August, BlackRock reached the final close of its maiden Asia-Pacific Private Credit Opportunities Fund. The fund will focus on investing in senior secured lending opportunities in the mid-market while opportunistically investing in distressed deals in select APAC countries, such as India, Indonesia, and Australia.
In the same month, BlackRock also announced the appointment of Rajat Agrawal as Managing Director in the Asian private credit team. He will report to Neeraj Seth, head of Asian Credit. Agrawal’s appointment marks the first senior recruitment in India for BlackRock’s private credit platform.
