South Korea’s venture capital firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/BonAngels-Venture-Partners/">BonAngels Venture Partners</a> is targeting to make more than 10 investments in Southeast Asia this year and planning to raise another fund for the region, a top executive of the firm said.
The VC closed a $50-million fund in October 2018 to make early-stage investments in Southeast Asia, South Korea and Japan.
“The current fund, BonAngels Pacemaker Fund 3, covers Seed to Series A, and we plan to raise another Growth fund for over Series B investments,” BumKyu Lee, Principal at BonAngels, told DEALSTREETASIA in an email interview.
In Southeast Asia, BonAngels will focus on investments in e-commerce, fintech, healthcare, education, on-demand services and enterprise software. “We’re interested in every market that has huge potential growth, but firstly we’re trying to approach the markets that we’ve experienced in Korea. We believe that we can share our knowledge in those markets,” Lee added.
The VC firm said it is in the process of making three investments in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. It is targeting cheque sizes of up to $500k for such early bets.
“We believe that SEA’s startup era has just begun. After seeing the success of companies like Grab and Tokopedia, a lot of young-and-smart people are launching their startups. This is the time that the market needs experienced VCs to spread their knowledge, and we strongly believe that BonAngels can do the job,” Lee emphasized.
While BonAngels is eyeing all SEA markets, Lee said he sees opportunities arising from Vietnam&#8217;s similarities with South Korea in terms of culture, economy and talent.
The VC firm has backed four startups in Vietnam to date: VLeisure, a Vietnamese tech startup that operates a travel and accommodation booking marketplace in Southeast Asia, ticket booking platform <a class="" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Vexere/">Vexere</a>, discounts platform <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Jamja/">JAMJA</a> and e-commerce platform Chopp.
BonAngels was set up as one of the first early-stage venture capital firms in South Korea by BG Chang, the founder of Bluehole (PUBG), Simon Kang and Inae Song. Its $50-million third fund follows its BonAngels Pacemaker Fund 1 ($22 million) and BonAngels Pacemaker Fund 2 ($30 million). The third fund ups total capital under the management of the firm to $100 million.
