Global buyout firm <a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/tpg-divests-stake-in-myanmar-distillery-company-to-thai-beverage-84112/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TPG Capital Management</a> is set to roll out a new emerging markets-focused strategy for investments in infrastructure with the launch of a pledge fund.
The infrastructure strategy from the global heavyweight private equity investor would be partially led by Jin-Yong Cai, a former CEO of The World Bank&#8217;s International Finance Corp who joined TPG early last year, Axios reported last week.
As a region with large developing economies that have an expanding appetite for<a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/blackstone-said-seek-10-billion-infrastructure-84200/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> infrastructure</a>, the sector has seen interest from large global alternative asset managers and strategic investors.
Many sovereign wealth funds and pension funds have also shown their interest to back projects like road, ports, power plants and renewable energy projects in Asia and other emerging markets.
In fact, in a report last year TPG was said to be readying a multi-billion global infrastructure fund with an eye also on emerging markets that include India.
For instance, private equity firm Blackstone, last week was learnt to be seeking as much as $10 billion to supplement a $20 billion anchor commitment for the pool before it starts investing from the largest-ever infrastructure fund.
Also, Singapore’s wealth fund <a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/singapore-gic-backs-irish-developer-glenveagh-properties-84207/">GIC </a>has picked up an interest in <a class="tinymce-colortext" style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/gic-invests-goldman-sachs-backed-japan-renewable-energy-firm-joint-control-84627/">Goldman Sachs-backed Japan Renewable Energy Corporation </a>for joint control, the first investment by GIC in clean energy space.
The infrastructure-focused fund to be launched by TPG is said to be a pledge fund model where there is no committed capital or pool of fund, but rather, the model takes each deal on a case to case basis. It gives the investor flexibility to deploy capital, especially when entering a new segment.
Further, the report also noted that TPG could start raising for its eighth flagship buyout fund by the end of first quarter next year. The previous fund in the series TPG Partners VII, is a $10 billion vehicle that was closed last year.
The firm has $70 billion of assets under management and offices in San Francisco, Fort Worth, Austin, Dallas, Houston, New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Luxembourg, Melbourne, Moscow, Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo. Its investment platforms are across a wide range of asset classes including private equity, growth venture, real estate, credit and public equity.
