<a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/carlyle-group/" target="_blank">Carlyle Group</a><a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/carlyle-group/" target="_blank"> LP</a> has hired a former senior executive from <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.jnj.com/" target="_blank">Johnson &amp; Johnson</a>, Jesse Wu, to advise on investing in China’s healthcare sector.
<a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/carlyle-group-hires-former-j-j-executive-to-advise-asia-buyout-fund-1466442004" target="_blank">WSJ reported</a> that Wu became a senior adviser to Carlyle’s Asian buyout fund last week, and will assist in scouting deals for the US private equity firm and expand its portfolio companies in the healthcare industry.
This comes on the back of reforms that make the industry more attractive to private equity money.
Wu is expected to help Carlyle navigate China’s healthcare policy changes and evaluate prospective investment targets’ management teams, as well as mentor them after Carlyle invests. The buyout fund also has three operating partners that help its portfolio companies in Asia outside Japan.
Wu previously ran Johnson &amp; Johnson’s operations in China and had oversight of the company’s global consumer group.
The report noted that consumers are increasingly paying a premium for top-quality healthcare services across Asia, and investors have tried to capitalise on that through private hospitals and biotech companies in China and elsewhere.
In an interview with WSJ, X.D. Yang, co-head of the Carlyle Asia buyout team, commented that firms can no longer just be a generalist private-equity investors in Asia.
“Healthcare is one of the sectors where industry expertise is important,” he said.
Carlyle’s Asia buyout fund has made a number of investments in the healthcare industry across Asia, putting more than $1.3 billion into seven deals. The pharmaceutical industry remained untapped under the fund.
Those include investments in hospital services, such as Australia’s Healthscope, and medical-device makers, such as China’s Haier Bio-Medical and Laboratory Co. The private equity giant has yet to invest in the pharma industry in Asia.
In March, <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/carlyle-wants-to-raise-1-billion-for-new-asia-private-equity-fund-1459330134" target="_blank">WSJ reported </a>that Carlyle was looking to raise around $1 billion for a new private equity fund to invest in Asian growth companies. It is the fifth fund the firm has raised to invest in smaller, fast-growing companies in Asia.
