Seoul-based education technology company Mathpresso, Hong Kong-based startup BOOQED and biotech firm Redesign Science have raised new funding rounds.
Legend Capital leads $14.5m Series B round in Seoul-based Mathpresso
Seoul-based education technology startup Mathpresso announced on Tuesday that it has secured $14.5 million in a Series B funding round led by Legend Capital, a venture capital subsidiary of Chinese investment firm Legend Holdings.
The Series B round, which took the total capital raised by Mathpresso to $21.2 million, saw the participation of new investors InterVest and NP Investments, as well as existing investor Mirae Asset Venture Investment, according to a company statement.
Founded in 2015, Mathpresso is an ed-tech company that offers “QANDA,” a mobile app that enables students to search for solutions to math problems by taking a photo and ask one-on-one questions to top-school tutors.
More than one million students in South Korea – a third of the entire K-12 student population – use the service to do homework or study for exams as of 2019, according to the statement. The QANDA mobile app has become the no. 1 education app in Japan after four months since its launch in the country in late 2018. The mobile app is also available to users in Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.
“Legend Capital has witnessed robust growth of China&#8217;s mobile education market. We strongly believe that Mathpresso has the technological and operational capabilities to expand overseas and grasp new opportunities emerging from the digitization of education, such as offering personalized learning for each individual student,” said Joon Sung Park, Managing Director at Legend Capital.
Legend Capital is also an early investor of Chinese mobile education companies including Zuoyebang, where students can seek answers to study-related problems, and Onion Math, a Beijing-based provider of an animated education video platform.
HK-based startup BOOQED raises $1.675m in seed funding
Hong Kong-based startup BOOQED has raised $1.675 million in seed funding to finance its product roll-out, marketing and talent recruitment.
Investors in the new round include global real estate services and investment management Colliers, American seed accelerator Techstars and Lazard Korea, according to a statement on Wednesday.
BOOQED, founded in late 2016 by Techstars alumni, operates as a digital marketplace that allows individuals and corporates to access and book meeting, work and event spaces.
The BOOQED platform has already launched in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shenzhen.
“This funding will give us the impetus to fine-tune and more aggressively market our platform and app in our target business cities of Hong Kong, Singapore and Shenzhen,” said David Wong, co-founder and CEO of BOOQED.
China’s VC Morningside backs Redesign in its $2m seed round
Redesign Science, a platform technology company combining computer science and biotechnology to advance new small molecule therapeutics, announced on Monday the completion of a $2 million seed funding round.
The seed round was led by Brooklyn-based venture capital firm Notation, with the participation of Chinese early-stage venture capital company Morningside Venture Capital, New York-based Third Kind Venture Capital, Refactor Capital, which is led by former Google executive David Lee, and Thomas Weingarten.
Proceeds from this round will drive execution of Redesign&#8217;s longer-term strategy. The firm will hire engineers to scale and automate its technology platform, while also financing its ongoing operations.
