<p>Chinese startups bagged mega funding rounds accounting for nine of the top 10 largest venture capital financing deals globally in the second quarter of 2018. Interestingly, all the top ten deals were sealed in Asia.</p>
<p>Deals in Greater China drove deal-making by accounting for 54 per cent ($40 billion) of the global dealmaking worth $74 billion in Q2 2018 across 1,155 deals, said the latest Preqin report. The largest deal in the space was Alibaba-backed Ant Financial’s $14 billion Series C that closed last month.</p>

<p>Globally, this is a record high for aggregate deal value &#8211; the fourth quarterly total to break records since Q1 2017, and the fourth consecutive quarter to exceed $50 billion, said the report. Q2 in particular had seen unprecedented levels of financing, surpassing the previous record for quarterly deal value by a margin of more than $20 billion from the previous record of $53 billion seen in Q4 2017, driven by unprecedented dealmaking for Chinese companies.</p>

<p>Some of the notable deals in China included e-commerce platform Pinduoduo’s $3 billion funding round led by Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Sequoia Capital China, truck hailing service platform Manbang’s $1.9 billion round that saw investment from Japan’s Softbank Group and Alphabet Inc’s venture capital fund CapitalG, and Chinese facial recognition technology developer SenseTime’s $1.2 billion round.</p>
<p>Moreover, this year several newcomers in China, including the likes of Toutiao, Ofo, and VIPkid, raised large funding rounds and entered the unicorn club (startups with $1 billion valuation and above).</p>
<p>North America, meanwhile, saw 1,374 deals worth $23 billion, and Europe saw 636 deals worth a combined $5.7 billion.</p>
<p>In terms of sectors, software deals were most common, accounting for 24 per cent of the number of financings globally. However, funding for internet companies represented the largest proportion (37 per cent) of deal value, followed by healthcare and telecom. The largest of these was the $16 billion acquisition of Flipkart by Walmart. IPO activity, in particular, surged: 46 IPOs were announced in Q2, worth a combined $21 billion. This is the second highest quarterly value for IPOs on record, following Q3 2014 (when Alibaba became public).</p>
<p>Christopher Elvin, Head of Private Equity Products at Preqin said: &#8220;Venture capital-backed exit activity, meanwhile, has been limited in number – Q2 continues a long-term decline seen since Q4 2015 – but what exits have occurred have been large. The sale of Flipkart to Walmart is the largest by some distance in Q2, but the standout story is the resurgence of IPO activity. Public offerings of venture capital-backed companies made $21 billion, the third-highest quarterly total on record. This is only surpassed by the quarter in which Alibaba went public, which accounted for almost all exit value in the quarter. The Spotify listing accounted for $7.4 billion in Q2 2018, indicating that activity was driven by multiple transactions much more than before.”</p>
