Singapore-based digital telco Circles.Life has raised an unspecified amount in a Series C round led by Sequoia India to launch into new markets like Taiwan and Australia.
The startup said it will launch in more than five markets in the next 18 months, investing over $36.8 million (S$50 million) per launch. The new launches include Taiwan in Q2 and Australia in Q3.
According to a statement, Circles.Life will invest another $18.4 million (S$25 million) in its engineering centre in Bangalore to support its expansion plans. It recently also acquired companies such as Fratics and Klassify for their machine learning capabilities.
According to a Business Times report, some proceeds will also be channelled to its Circles-X platform that uses cloud-based technology to automate end-to-end telco systems.
Circles.Life also announced two senior hires to drive its international expansion efforts.
They are: Ajinkya Mukhopadhyay, former Joint Head of Asian Telecoms Investment Banking at UBS AG and Group Head of M&amp;A at Telstra; and Waseem Yusaf, a former senior executive from Nokia. Mukhopadhyay joins Circles.Life as its Head of Business Development &amp; International Expansion, while Yusaf joins as Head of International Launches.
Mohit Bhatnagar, Managing Director at Sequoia Capital India Advisors, said: “Circles.Life has a fresh and disruptive approach in reimagining what the telco experience of the future can be for millions of people. It’s an asset-light model, combined with sophisticated and battle-hardened cloud-based software, allowing them to partner with progressive telcos to serve millennials with better experience, more convenience, and more competitive mobile data rates.”
Founded in 2016, Circles.Life claims to eliminate all hardware and appliances in its architecture into a software-based cloud, making its business model more asset-light than traditional telcos. Its technology also allows the telco to launch new services more quickly through smart analytics and its API-based platform.
Some of the company’s recent digital lifestyle products include Discover, an AI-driven mobile events app, and Ride for Rewards, a tie-up with Singapore’s EZ Link contactless transit smart card that allows commuters to earn redeemable points.
