Hong Kong-headquartered <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/clsa-capital-partners/">CLSA Capital Partners</a> has agreed to acquire majority stake in Japanese toy and daily goods maker Bloom Group.
The value of the acquisition was not disclosed. CLSA Capital, which will conduct the deal through its Sunrise Capital III, said the transaction will close in early April 2019.
Toshiko Kuwahara, the current shareholder and founder of Bloom Group, will maintain her minority shareholding and continue to be involved in management and product development.
In addition to designing and manufacturing amusement-related products, toys and daily goods, Bloom Group manages specialty shops in Tokyo. The company is known for its edible and inedible soft-textured “Squishy” figures under the brand names of “Bloom” and “iBloom” since 2002. The toys have also become popular internationally in North America, Europe and Asia.
“In order for these products to endure, we believe it is crucial to further enhance our organisation, administrative functions and our design capabilities. We are pleased to expand our business through collaboration with Sunrise III, which has significant expertise in helping businesses to transform and expand overseas,” Kuwahara said.
Megumi Kiyozuka, president and representative director of Sunrise Capital, said, Bloom has established “a very prominent brand” with its “Squishy” category.
Sunrise Capital focuses on opportunities in Japan’s mid-cap buyout sector. The vehicle has raised approximately $1 billion to date and completed investments in approximately 30 companies including both standalone and follow-on investments since its establishment in 2006.
