We want to clarify that the previous story we put out on Bukalapak&#8217;s first-half results was based on its revenue contribution to Emtek, and therefore not a true reflection of the company&#8217;s financial picture. We are sorry to have made an error in reading related parties transactions in Emtek&#8217;s financial statement. The error is regretted and we unreservedly apologise to Bukalapak for the distress and embarrassment caused by our wrong reporting. We&#8217;ve reworked the story now and added details that were shared by Bukalapak.

Indonesian e-commerce unicorn Bukalapak has clarified that its gross profit in the first half of this year was three times higher than that of the same period last year, with profitability exceeding expectations.
In a statement, Bukalapak highlighted that for the month of April 2019 alone, the company’s gross profit has  more than doubled what it achieved in December 2018.
The company said that the growth has been contributed by the implementation of its expansion strategies, which focuses on tapping the remaining 95% of Indonesian e-commerce retail as blue ocean opportunity.
Among the new strategies it has deployed in this regard is its partnership with over 2 million with warungs or mom-and-pop kiosks and individual agents to tap into the O2O commerce space.
The company claims that, on average, the number of customers of its Warungs, which sell a range of consumer goods and virtual products, is twice higher than of shopping centers.
Apart from expansion into the offline market to widen its customer base, Bukalapak has also started to tap into overseas market. In May, the Jakarta-based company launched BukaGlobal, a new platform which connects its more than 4 million Indonesian sellers to international buyers in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Brunei Darussalam.
