Southeast Asia-focused PE firm <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Creador/">Creador</a>-backed <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/Mobile-World/">Mobile World JSC </a>(MWG) has reported a 43 per cent jump in revenue in the first five months of this year, according to its latest business results.
Vietnam’s largest mobile device and consumer electronics retailer MWG posted net revenue of over VND37 trillion ($1.61 billion) and after-tax profit of VND1.28 trillion ($55.8 million) for the first five months, up 43 per cent and 44 per cent year-on-year respectively.
Electronic products retail arm Dien May Xanh accounted for 56 per cent of MWG&#8217;s revenue, followed by the mobile phone retail chain The Gioi Di Dong (41 per cent) and the department store (3 per cent).
MWG’s CEO Tran Kinh Doanh told local media that the company’s top priority this year is to develop the Bach Hoa Xanh chain to about 1,000 stores in Ho Chi Minh City and expand to other provinces.
Meanwhile, The Gioi Di Dong announced a decrease in the number of mobile phone retail stores early this year for the first time after a decade of accelerated growth.
Founded in 2004, MWG initially established itself as a mobile device retailer in Vietnam, specializing in mobile phones, tablets, laptops, accessories and other related products through its thegioididong.com store network.
In February, Alstonia Costata Sdn. Bhd., an affiliate of South and Southeast Asia-focused PE firm Creador invested VND994 billion ($43.8 million) in MWG.
MWG is Creador’s 29th investment since the latter&#8217;s inception in 2011 and its first transaction in Vietnam, according to the official announcement from the PE firm sent to DEALSTREETASIA.
Creador focuses on long-term investments in growth-oriented businesses in South- and Southeast Asia. It is one of the most active PE firms in Southeast Asia and India and closed its third fund in 2017. The PE firm manages assets worth $875 million across its three funds. In India, it has backed around 10 companies and is currently investing from its $415-million third fund.
Vietnam-focused private equity firm Mekong Capital earlier announced that its Mekong Enterprise Fund II (MEF II) fully exited its investment in MWG at a returns multiple of 57x and IRR of 61.1 per cent after staying invested for 10.5 years.
