According to <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1741583/000174158318000002/xslFormDX01/primary_doc.xml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a filing</a> to the US market regulator Securities &amp; Exchange Commission (SEC), the investment firm has secured $313 million so far for its latest fund, leaving $137 million still left to be raised. Nexus has raised the corpus till now from about 29 investors, according to the filing.
India and US-focused Nexus Venture had announced the closing of its Fund IV with committed capital of more than $450 million in December 2015. Prior to its fourth fund, Nexus Venture Partners had three earlier funds–Fund I ($100 million) was announced in 2007, Fund II ($220 million) closed mid-2008 and Fund III ($270 million) in end 2012. It currently has around $1.2 billion of assets under management.
According to earlier news reports, Nexus Venture is looking to increase its investments in the US software sector even as several of its bets in the consumer internet space failed to hit the mark, leaving a bitter taste.
The last few years have been turbulent for Nexus with its massive investment in once-prolific e-commerce player <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/snapdeal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Snapdeal</a> failing to deliver results. Attempts to sell Snapdeal to larger rival Flipkart also fell through after months of negotiations. Another portfolio company <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/stayzilla" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stayzilla</a> shut operations early last year, with its founder Yogendra Vasupal on charges of defrauding an advertising agency. Prior to that, another large bet <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/housing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Housing.com</a> – which after much controversy with co-founder Rahul Yadav – did not yield desired returns and was finally sold to <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/proptiger" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PropTiger</a>.
Nexus has picked up the pace of its investments this year, with the latest additions to its portfolio including US and Bengaluru-based developer tools startup Hasura, Bengaluru-based online logistics startup Pando, office commute automation platform MoveInSync Technology Solutions, and healthtech startup LiveHealth among others.
After the ups and downs in the last couple of years, the closure rate for venture capital funds has picked up in 2018. Recently, India-focused early-stage investor Saama Capital has closed its fourth fund at $100 million, less than a month after it launched the fundraising process. Also, Mumbai-based early-stage investor India Quotient announced the first close of its $60-million third fund, having raised half the amount.
Last month, Delhi-based early-stage investor WaterBridge Ventures reached the final close of its maiden venture capital fund at $30 million, while Prime Venture Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm based out of Bengaluru, also announced the close of its third fund at around $60 million.
Prior to that, Bengaluru-based venture capital firm 3one4 Capital closed its second fund with commitments of $39 million and pi Ventures marked the second close of its $30-million maiden fund at $25 million.
