Indonesian VC firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=East+Ventures" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">East Ventures</a> is planning two exits after successfully investing in about 20 early-stage startups last year, managing partner Wilson Cuaca told DEALSTREETASIA recently.
The exits will be announced “soon”, Cuaca said, without disclosing further details. If the plans go through, East Ventures will have nine successful exits under its name.
East Ventures had earlier successfully exited portfolio companies such as Disdus, PriceArea, ShopDeca, and SCOOP.
Last year, East Ventures received more than 800 pitches in total, and decided to invest in about 20 of them. The firm invested in startups operating in the fintech, agriculture, e-commerce enabling, as well as SaaS.
“This year we will continue to monitor fintech, especially payment,” Cuaca had said.
Recently, East Ventures <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/indonesias-east-ventures-partners-sg-innovate-ev-hive-connected-with-bash-71100/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">teamed up</a> with Singapore’s <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=SGInnovate" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SGInnovate</a> to create a joint landing pad for startups from both countries, according to an announcement. East Ventures’ managed co-working space EV Hive will be connected with BASH, a startup space operated by SGInnovate. On top of that, startups in Series B stage and above can seek support from EDBI, the global investment arm of the Singapore Economic Development Board.
The partnership will allow members of both institutions to “tap into networks, spaces and services” of each other, in Singapore and Indonesia. The program is expected to further ease regional expansion and open an easier collaboration between startups in the regions.
East Ventures is one of the most active startups in Indonesia. In January, the firm closed a $27.5 million fund &#8211; its fifth so far.
The firm has been backing businesses in the prototyping stages. Its investment thesis identifies technology verticals that are poised to expand in each market, then backs people whom it believes will be future leaders in the sector. Once a clear category winner has been established, the firm shifts its focus to other parts of the value chain.
This year, the company aims to double the number of lead investments while maintaining a stable amount of deals. There will be more mergers and acquisitions involving its portfolio companies in the months to come, it said. At the same time, startups in the region can expect little activity in series B investments as the ecosystem matures.
