<a href="http://www.gm.com/">General Motors</a>’ Southeast Asia Operations president Tim Zimmerman has appointed automotive industry veteran Wail A Farghaly to be the managing director of <a href="http://en.chevrolet.com.vn/">GM Vietnam</a>.
The new executive is expected to take over from next month, to oversee the automobile manufacturer’s business across the country, which includes an assembly plant in Hanoi.
Farghaly will replace Gaurav Gupta, who has been appointed for the same position of GM Indonesia. Gupta has been serving GM Vietnam since 2011.
Farghaly joined the American auto giant in 1999 as director of brand, product and marketing research at GM Egypt, before becoming manager of sales – North Africa, and then manager of GM’s African operations sales department.
Since 2010, he has been director of the North Africa regional marketing office at GM Overseas Distribution.
Farghaly plans to build on the business platform already established in Vietnam.
Previously, Gupta led the transformation of Vietnam Daewoo Motor Company, a subsidiary of GM Korea, to GM Vietnam, the local development of the Chevrolet brand.
“Vietnam and Indonesia are regarded as high-potential markets,” said Zimmerman. “With Wail in charge of our operations in Vietnam and Gaurav in charge of our business in Indonesia, GM is positioned for growth in the two key ASEAN countries.”
Meanwhile, this change in leadership is seen as a move of the US automobile group to revive the Chevrolet brand in Vietnam.
GM Vietnam’s operations have been relatively sluggish. Even with a presence of 16 outlets nationwide, the sales of Captiva, Spark and Chevrolet Cruze vehicles fell far behind competitors like Kia Morning, Hyundai Grand, Toyota Vios or Honda City.
