Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi has been appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/fortis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fortis Healthcare Ltd</a>, replacing Bhavdeep Singh, who resigned from the troubled hospital chain in November, citing personal reasons.
On 3 February, Raghuvanshi resigned as vice-chairman, MD and group CEO of Narayana Hrudayalaya (NH) Ltd after 18 years with the organisation.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, as our new CEO. With a proven track record as a successful clinician and an able administrator, Dr Raghuvanshi has developed a deep understanding of the business, patient care and healthcare sector. His leadership at Fortis will be critical as the company continues to pursue its vision to create a world-class, integrated, healthcare delivery system,&#8221; Fortis chairman Ravi Rajagopal said in a statement.
The Fortis board approved his appointment on Thursday.
On February 3, Dr Raghuvanshi&#8217;s resignation was accepted by the NH board. “Dr Raghuvanshi has decided to move on from NH on personal grounds, after serving the company for 18 years. Dr Raghuvanshi’s resignation has been deliberated by the board of NH and stands accepted,&#8221; the hospital said in a statement. Dr Emmanuel Rupert has been appointed MD &amp; Group CEO in place of Raghuvanshi.
In the past, Dr Raghuvanshi has been associated with the Bombay Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, Vijaya Heart foundation and Manipal Heart Foundation. “He is an acknowledged business leader and is known for his strong record of building and leading great teams while delivering exceptional results,&#8221; Fortis said in a statement.
Bhavdeep Singh’s resignation in November cleared the way for IHH to bring in its own candidate to run Fortis Healthcare. Fortis is yet to make a formal announcement on the new CEO.
Malaysia’s IHH healthcare Bhd took control of Fortis healthcare Ltd in November last year and appointed representatives from IHH on its board.
In July last year, the Fortis board unanimously accepted the binding offer from IHH Healthcare, ending a protracted bidding war for the hospital operator. The board of Fortis Healthcare approved a binding investment proposal from IHH to invest ₹4,000 crore by way of preferential allotment for a 31.1% stake, valuing the cash-strapped firm at ₹8,880 crore.
The money infused through the deal helped Fortis meet its immediate liquidity requirement, including the acquisition of assets from Singapore-based Religare Health Trust (RHT) and providing an exit to private equity investors in SRL Diagnostics, Fortis’s diagnostic arm.
Singh was the third top executive to resign after IHH won the bidding war. Chief financial officer Gagandeep Singh Bedi resigned in August and company secretary Rahul Ranjan quit in October.
