Gaw Capital becomes majority shareholder in Vietnamese education company NPX

Hong Kong-based private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners has invested an undisclosed sum in Vietnam-based K-12 education company NPX Point Avenue, per a statement on Tuesday.

Gaw Capital made the investment through its Education Platform, and has become a majority shareholder of NPX.

The private equity firm had earlier led a $12-million Series A funding for NPX in 2021.

NPX’s core business is its K-12 school, True North International School, located in Hanoi. The campus has a total capacity of 1,000 students and serves as a SAT and AP testing centre, according to the statement.

It also runs Point Avenue, an after-school centre focused on English enrichment, debate and public speaking, test preparation, admissions consulting, and leadership camps.

Gaw Capital said its Education Platform has also invested in an early childhood education group in Singapore, and Stellart International School of Arts, an international arts school in Southern China.

In Vietnam, the firm invested in the industrial real estate platform GawNP, prior to NPX.

Gaw Capital has raised $22.9 billion since 2005, and commanded assets of $35.8 billion under management as of Q3 2024, it said.

The education space in Vietnam has attracted a lot of interest from private equity investors as companies are seeking capital for expansion.

DealStreetAsia reported recently that the shareholders of education group EQuest hired Rippledot Capital to run a sale process which could seek as much as $200 million. EQuest is backed by US-based KKR.

Malaysia-based Taylor’s Education Group, another portfolio business of KKR, was also understood to be looking at acquiring Vietnam-based education company Koala House.

Consolidation among private education companies has also heated up in the country as securing land sites for schools in major cities emerges as a challenge.

Navis Capital-backed IGC Group acquired Hong Duc School early last year. EQuest also acquired Khoi Nguyen and Ngoi Sao Ha Noi to beef up its platform.

Deals are also active in the edtech and enrichment segment. Excelsior Capital Vietnam Partners invested in English language training company Kapla Vietnam as its latest announced deal. Meanwhile, Dream Viet Education recently bagged funding from Asia Business Builders and DTP Education Solutions.
