<a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Google">Google</a> has confirmed its investment in Indonesian ride-hailing giant <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Go-Jek">Go-Jek</a> as part of the company&#8217;s efforts to support and participate in Indonesia&#8217;s growth.
In a company blog, Google vice president <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Ceasar%20Sengupta">Ceasar Sengupta</a> confirmed on Monday the investment in Go-Jek but did not provide financial details and other terms.
&#8220;This investment lets us partner with a great local champion in Indonesia’s flourishing startup ecosystem, while also deepening our commitment to Indonesia’s internet economy,&#8221; Sengupta said.
A Reuters report earlier said Alphabet Inc’s Google, Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd and Chinese online platform Meituan-Dianping are investing in a fundraising round of Go-Jek, which is raising about $1.2 billion in total.
Go-Jek, according to Sengupta, is led by a strong Indonesian management team and has a proven track record of using technology to make life more convenient for Indonesians across the country.
By investing in local companies, building locally relevant products, and training local talent, Google hopes to see more amazing local champions like Go-Jek emerge in Indonesia, Sengupta said.
&#8220;As always, we’re driven and inspired by our users and partners and are always on the lookout for more opportunities to support them,&#8221; he said.
Google has already trained nearly 60,000 Indonesians on mobile app development, with the goal of reaching 100,000 Indonesian developers by 2020.
&#8220;Indonesia already has a thriving internet economy and a bustling startup scene, home to four of Southeast Asia’s eight unicorns, but we’d like to do more to help supercharge and grow with it,&#8221; Sengupta said, adding that Indonesia is home to the fifth largest population of internet users in the world, with more than 133 million people online.
Google’s investment supercharges the Indonesian ride-hailing startup to tackle head-on the competition at home from Grab and Uber Technologies. Indonesia has been the battleground for ride-hailing companies because of the huge potential that the country’s large population provides.
Established in 2010 as a motorcycle ride-hailing phone service, Go-Jek has evolved into an on-demand mobile platform and a cutting-edge app, providing a wide range of services that include transportation, logistics, mobile payments, food delivery, and many other on-demand services.
Aside from positioning itself as Indonesia&#8217;s largest ride-hailing service, Go-Jek also aims to consolidate its position as the dominant player in the country&#8217;s digital payment space.
Last December, Go-Jek announced that it has reached deals to acquire three local financial technology companies to boost its standing in Indonesia&#8217;s the digital payment market.
