Japan&#8217;s <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/japanese-pension-fund-chikyoren-selects-sumitomo-mitsui-manager-local-pe-83409/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) </a>has awarded the global infrastructure investment mandate to UK-headquartered private equity firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/pe-pantheon-promotes-long-time-asia-exec-alex-wilmerding-partner-90061/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pantheon</a>.
GPIF has appointed Pantheon as a &#8220;Fund of Funds Manager&#8221; following the RFP in April 2017. The strategy is to implement alternative investments following a &#8220;multi-manager&#8221; approach to pursue fund investments and co-investments, according to its website update on Tuesday.
The strategy will have Nomura Asset Management Co Ltd as the gatekeeper, it added. However, GPIF did not disclose the size of the strategy and other details.
It is the same strategy for which GPIF, the world&#8217;s largest pension fund, had appointed StepStone Infrastructure &amp; Real Assets as a manager and Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management Company as gatekeeper in January.
The latest manger, Pantheon Group, that manages assets worth $37 billion, is a global private equity, infrastructure and real assets fund investor and invests on behalf of over 475 investors.
The investors include public and private pension plans, insurance companies, endowments and foundations. It is engaged in primary, co-investment and secondary private asset solutions across all stages and geographies.
Meanwhile, GPIF recently also granted a mandate to Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking to handle its domestic real estate investments in Japan. The $1.3-trillion pension fund is seeking to diversify its alternative asset investments and increase it to about 5 per cent of its investments.
