China-focused venture capital firm <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/china-northern-light-venture-new-horizon-lead-100m-series-d-beibei-com-44593/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Northern Light Venture Capital</a> is raising its $30 million fifth fund, Northern Light Strategic Fund V, targeting early stage opportunities in innovation and disruptive technology.
The Hong-Kong based firm, in a filing to the US <a style="color: #000080;" href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/lawmakers-urge-sec-stop-chx-china-deal-77397/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Securities Exchange Commission</a>, announced the fund and said that the Director of the General Partner was Feng Deng, the founding Managing Director at the firm, and Yan Ke, the Venture Partner. The filing has been signed by Jeffry Lee who is the Managing Director and the Chief Financial Officer of the venture capital firm.
While the firm claims to be a China-focused VC, its latest investments have been in the US-based firms. Northern Light last month participated in a $50 million <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/adding-author-nea-chinese-funds-invest-50m-in-u-s-autonomous-driving-tech-startup-76177/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Series B round for California-based Drive.ai </a>which is looking to expand operations and R&amp;D for its software and hardware kits that give vehicles the ability to drive themselves. Earlier in April, it led a funding round in Seattle-based storage solutions provider Qumulo&#8217;s $30 million funding.
The firm did not respond to an email query on the sectors and sub-sectors that it would focus from the fifth fund.
The firm has committed capital worth $1.7 billion with fourth USD denominated funds and four RMB funds. Having backed over 180 ventures, the firm has done 70 per cent A round stage investments, 20 per cent Series B and about 10 per cent in seed stage investments.
Among its key focus sectors are interactive entertainment, marketplaces, intelligent solutions, industry verticals, and enterprise solutions, AI and robotics, energy technology, new materials, cleantech, automated equipment, components and subsystems. In healthcare segment, it focuses on medical devices, E-health, medical services, and biological, genomic and in-vitro therapeutics.
