A clutch of investors led by Foodpanda&#8217;s German parent <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/delivery-hero" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Delivery Hero</a> are investing around $62.25 million in food-tech startup <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/zomato" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zomato&#8217;s </a> latest funding round, according to a VCCircle <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/naspers-backed-delivery-hero-leads-zomato-s-new-funding-round" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report </a>quoting regulatory filings.
The news comes close on the heels of US investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/grade-book" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grade Book Capital Partners</a> investing Rs 284 crore ($40 million) in the Gurgaon-based company. The investment was a part of the Zomato&#8217;s Series I round, where it raised $210 million from existing Chinese investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/ant-financial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ant Financial</a> in October last year.
Through the transaction, the parent company Info Edge’s shareholding in Zomato reduced to about 27.68 per cent on a fully converted and diluted basis from 30.91 per cent.
Prior to that in February last year, Zomato had raised $200 million in a funding round led by Ant Financial. That round saw Ant Financial buy Zomato shares in primary and secondary transactions, while Info Edge sold its shares bringing its shareholding down to 30.91 per cent from 44.74 per cent then.
Zomato was valued at $2 billion after the last round of funding.
According to Zomato’s latest filings to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs quoted by VCCircle, Delivery Hero is leading the round with Rs 350 crore for a 2.26 per cent stake in Zomato. Another new investor Chinese venture capital firm Shunwei Capital is said to be investing Rs 35.06 crore in Zomato in this round in lieu of a  0.23 per cent stake . Also, Saturn Shine Ltd has put in the remaining amount for a 0.36 per cent stake.
Zomato is said to be targeting a mega funding round of up to $1 billion, for which it was also in talks with Chinese private equity major Primavera Capital.
The online food ordering and restaurant discovery platform was also recently said to be be in advanced discussions with Delivery Hero to sell its business in the United Arab Emirates for around $200-250 million.
The series of reports come in at a time when Zomato is embroiled in a fierce battle with rival unicorn, Swiggy, to capture a larger share of the market.
A couple of months ago, Swiggy raised $1 billion in fresh capital from existing and new investors such as Naspers Ltd and Tencent Holdings Ltd, marking the biggest ever funding round in the country’s booming food-tech sector. In June 2018, a $210-million funding had made Swiggy a unicorn.
