The round was led by Japanese travel major HIS Co, with participation from existing investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/makemytrip" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MakeMyTrip</a>, India&#8217;s largest online travel operator.
The Delhi-based firm plans to use this second round of funding to strengthen its technology platform, supply and agent network and expand into international markets starting with Japan.
Founded in 2015 by former chief technology officer at online marketplace <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/snapdeal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Snapdeal</a> Amitabh Misra, GoFro is an online marketplace for holiday packages connecting travellers with suppliers and destination experts.
“Support of HIS and MakeMyTrip is a validation of the potential of GoFro’s marketplace platform. We now look forward to HIS’s global reach and experience to help us enhance our global supply network and provide great holiday packages at competitive prices,” said Amitabh Misra, founder and chief executive, GoFro.
According to a report in The Economic Times, the company is trying to expand the round further and is currently in talks with more potential strategic investors.
“GoFro is poised for great success in the high growth holiday travel market in India. We believe it holds the potential to become the next travel-tech revolution. GoFro platform is globally scalable and we look forward to taking this revolution to the Japanese market,” said Akira Hirabayashi, vice-chairman, HIS Co Ltd.
The Japanese travel major has around 230 overseas branches in 141 cities across 66 countries, in addition to the 233 retail outlets in Japan.
Gurgaon-based MakeMyTrip has acquired controlling stake in GoFro in lieu of a $5 million investment in 2015. The company has also made a series of investments in small to mid-size travel technology firms including Simplotel, Mygola.com, Inspirock, and HolidayIQ.
Travel tech has emerged as one of the most attractive sectors for investors in India. In June, Mauritius-based private equity fund <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/emerging-india" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Emerging India</a> picked up a majority stake in travel firm <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/goomo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goomo Holdings</a> in lieu of its investment of $50 million. Prior to that online travel search portal <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/ixigo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ixigo</a> has closed its $15 million Series B round led by venture capital firm <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/sequoia-capital" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sequoia Capital</a> with participation from <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/fosun" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fosun Kinzon Capital Pte Ltd</a>.
