India-focused early-stage investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/saama-capital" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Saama Capital</a> has closed its fourth fund at $100 million, less than a month after it launched the fundraising process, regulatory filings show.
According to an <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1734873/000173487318000002/xslFormDX01/primary_doc.xml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SEC filing</a>, the first sale for the fund took place on March 28, 2018 and the Bengaluru and Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm raised $100 million on offer for the fund.
The venture capital firm looks to make early and growth stage investments and occasionally at the seed stage, by typically cutting cheques between $1 million and $3 million.
While it claims to be sector agnostic, it is known to focus on consumer brands, technology and the financial services space. Some of its most well-known bets include online financial services provider <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/lendingkart" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LendingKart</a>, jewellery e-tailer <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/bluestone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BlueStone</a>, condiments manufacturer <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/veebs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Veeba</a> and beverage distributor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/chai-point" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chai Point</a>, among others.
It has also exited prominent investments including digital payments major <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/paytm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paytm</a>, e-commerce firm <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/snapdeal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Snapdeal</a>, wine manufacturer <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/sula" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sula</a> and technology major <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/applabs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AppLabs</a>.
Saama Capital was founded in 2011 by Ash Lilani and Suresh Shanmugham who were leading venture investments for Silicon Valley Bank in India. The venture capital firm had raised $54 million for its first fund when it was still under SVB Capital Partners. Then, in 2012, it raised $26 million for a second fund, followed by the third fund for which it raised $58 million.
Saama Capital has publicly stated that it will not raise over $100 million for any fund, as delivering (returns) to LPs (limited partners or investors in the vehicle) becomes tough.
&#8220;People like the discipline we have on size. We have always stayed in the $50-75 million range and we have publicly told our LPs we will never go over $100 million of fund ever,&#8221; Lilani had said at the closure of the firm&#8217;s third fund.
Fundraising activity among India-focused venture capital firms has increased in the first few months of 2018. Most recently, Seattle and Bengaluru-based early-stage investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/unitus-seed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unitus Seed Fund</a> said, in its SEC filing, that it had so far raised $12.9 million for its second investment vehicle, which has a target corpus of $46 million.
Last week, Mumbai-based early-stage investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/india-quotient" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India Quotient</a> also announced the first close of its $60-million third fund, having raised half the amount. Last month, Delhi-based early-stage investor <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/waterbridge-ventures" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WaterBridge Ventures</a> reached the final close of its maiden venture capital fund at $30 million, while <a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/prime-venture" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Prime Venture Partners</a>, an early-stage venture capital firm based out of Bengaluru, also announced the close of its third fund at around $60 million.
Prior to that, Bengaluru-based venture capital firm<a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/3one4" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 3one4 Capital</a> closed its second fund with commitments of $39 million and<a href="http://dealstreetasia.com/tag/pi-ventures" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> pi Ventures</a> marked the second close of its $30-million maiden fund at $25 million.
