It&#8217;s raining funds for Indian startups.
Venture capital investments in India have hit a record high of $1.4 billion until September, surpassing the $1.2 billion worth of funding for the whole of 2014, said Venture Intelligence, a Chennai, India-based research firm.
Most of the surge was driven by early stage investment, particularly in the July-September quarter, which was the most active period in terms of deals. VC firms invested $536 million in 111 companies, a quarterly record. And for once, the top investment did not go to an e-commerce firm, but to a media startup &#8216;News in Shorts&#8217; that received $20 million from Tiger Global.
Not all deals were considered in the study. The data focussed on investments of upto $20 million in companies that are less than 10 years old. So Alibaba&#8217;s recent $500 million investment in e-commerce major Snapdeal was not part of this study.
The main investments happened in the seed, first and second rounds in companies not more than five years old. Such firms attracted a record $1 billion across 266 investments in the first nine months, easily eclipsing the previous high of $553 million in 2011.
However, most of the investments were directed at consumer-facing internet-led companies, and innovative companies in other sectors did not feel the surge, one reason why many of them <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/why-majority-of-indian-startups-are-in-a-rush-to-relocate-to-singapore-15666/" target="_blank">are relocating to Singapore</a>. Startups in the IT and IT-enabled sector accounted for 71 per cent of all investments, worth $376 million. The next sector in the order of funding was food and beverages, a distant second with $27 million worth of investments.
