The firm started operations in 2012, with Rahul Chowdhury, co-founder and chief executive, at the helm. It offers services such as data wiping and environment waste recycling, and competes with bigger rivals <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.greendust.com" target="_blank">GreenDust</a>, run by Reverse Logistics Co., and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.overcart.com" target="_blank">OverCart</a>, which raised angel funding in 2014, in the same space.
The Hyderabad-based company plans to use the funds to augment its refurbishing technology, particularly in the area of data wiping and analysis, said this <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/hardware/reboot-systems-india-in-talks-to-raise-15-million-to-25-million-to-take-on-greendust-overcart/articleshow/49498314.cms" target="_blank">report</a> in the Economic Times. Chowdhury expects the company to earn Rs 25 crore ($3.8 million), as he expands into refurbishing phones made by Samsung, LG and HTC.
The refurbishment industry had not seen much activity in terms of deals or investments in past years. But the soaring growth of e-commerce has allowed such players to expand their customers base in the last one year.
For instance, refurbished goods retailer GreenDust, backed by Vertex Venture Holdings, Sherpalo Ventures and Lightbox, has tied up with <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=flipkart" target="_blank">Flipkart</a>, <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Amazon" target="_blank">Amazon</a> and <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.dealstreetasia.com/?s=Snapdeal" target="_blank">Snapdeal</a> for buyback and exchange options for consumers. Online marketplace eBay launched refurbished goods as a category in India and tied up with eight companies to offer products in that space.
As e-commerce powers this sector, investors are becoming more interested. Foxconn, the world&#8217;s largest contract manufacturer, is said to be <a style="color: #000080;" href="http://www.livemint.com/Companies/f2eHCMQCuPWDy8VA13uBAK/Foxconn-nears-investment-deal-in-refurbished-goods-seller-Gr.html" target="_blank">interested in investing</a> around Rs 460 crore ($71 million) in GreenDust. Two of the biggest growth areas within the refurbished sector are mobile phones and electronics, which together will become $52 billion market by 2020 according to industry experts.
