Indonesia-based used phone e-commerce site Laku6 is said to have closed a $5-million funding round that has also attracted interest from a strategic investor, according to people aware of the development.
The strategic investor, whose identity could not be ascertained, might take a significant minority stake in the used phone site, the people quoted above said.
Existing investor Golden Gate Ventures is also expected to top up in the new round.
When contacted, a Laku6 spokesperson told DEALSTREETASIA: &#8220;We are indeed working on a round with a strategic investor but since it&#8217;s not closed, we cannot comment on the deal nor the amount at the moment.&#8221;
Following its launch in July 2015, Laku6 secured more than $1.8 million in seed funding in a round led by Singapore-based Golden Gate Ventures. Andy Zain, managing director of local venture capital firm Mountain Kejora, was among the angel investors participating in that round. Other investors who joined the round include Convergence Ventures, Skystar Capital and Rocket Internet.
According to media reports, Laku6 claims to be one of the largest online used phone retailers in Indonesia and Thailand, offering 40 per cent lower price on phones with a 90-day warranty.
DEALSTREETASIA earlier reported that Chinese giant <a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/jd-com-inc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.dealstreetasia.com/tag/jd-com-inc/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1551698716468000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHu8Fzf6xV0orFGzwb-c3Z364_guw">JD.com</a> was eyeing a business partnership with Laku6, clearly indicating the growing interest in this segment and the company. Outside of China and India, Indonesia is the hottest e-commerce market in Asia and is expected to grow from $8 billion in 2016 to $65 billion by 2020.

The startup has previously raised capital from Golden Gate Ventures, Convergence Ventures, Skystar Capital and Rocket Internet.
